Our long term realistic goal should be:

1.) Destruction of all Russian forces within Ukraine's UN-recognized borders

2.) Creation of a 200km military buffer zone inside Russia

3.) Russian reparations and giving up of all nuclear weapons.

Anything less is the west being complete chicken shit.

And seriously we have an army at our southern border that'll do anything for green cards. Go serve in Ukraine for 5 years and you'll get your green card!

I was thinking much the same thing.
Russian Demilitarization, DMZ inside Russian territory on Ukraine borders, reparations, denuclearization, removal of Russian UN veto power..

It's not realistic, but that is the point. You are negotiating with Russians. Huge demand, then settle for a fraction.

Result has to be a net loss.

As soon as the West frames terms on how much of Ukraine should be given away, it's a net win for them and they are rewarded.

That's how they operate, they don't care about the lives, they want the land. Capitulation on this guaranteesguarantees Russia will invite again at some future date.

Russia is probably not going to give up its nukes under any scenario where the country remains independent and able to make that decision. They have shown they can't fight conventional war. Without nukes they got nothing. They'd easily get run over by China. Their current military doctrine on China is even if it invades conventionally, nuke it. There is no replacement, short of maybe Russia joining NATO, which is not very likely given most of NATO hates their guts.

US is just not a serious country anymore on the world stage. Fighting over nothing-burger papers scandal and keeping helping the Ukraine on the back burner. We need to get Defense Production Act invoked and start pumping out weapons at the levels the Ukraine needs to win. They are fighting a war that NATO should be fighting, at least give them weapons.
Of course we could do more but to say we're not a serious country on the world stage is a bit off. We've provided them 150% more in total aid than all other countries combined. And close to triple the military aid. There is literally no other country in the world that could have supplied this amount of combined aid without notable internal ramifications and we're not even trying that hard. The only other country that people thought could come close is currently getting it's ass handed to them by our older or more limited weapon systems (and the very brave fighters wielding them)

I wish we were sending more tanks, but good news on the AS90s. I hope that these open the floodgates for Western tanks, even if a single squadron of C2s isn't really going to move the needle.

Accounting for the coming Challenger 3 program the UK probably only has 60-70 surplus Challenger 2 hulls that could be sent to Ukraine. There are likely hundreds of obtainable Leo 2A4/2A5s across Europe though some might need refurbishment. Clearly there is a massive pressure campaign to get Scholz to crack. If giving Ukraine a dozen M1s is what it eventually takes then we should just go ahead and do it, conditional on them supplying their entire (200-ish strong) Leopard 1A5 inventory which is sitting around waiting for export customers.

I know we haven't got that many Challengers to send, but I'd rather see all 60 spares go to Ukraine. Maybe try buying back the ones from Oman and supplying those too.

According to Oryx there are >250 documented cases of Ukrainian tanks being destroyed (meaning the actual figure is probably higher). We often see Russia losing over 10 tanks in a day. 14 just isn't going to put a dent in those kind of figures.

If I was the UK and feeling very frisky I'd abandon Challenger 3 plans, lease M1A2s from the US, and ship the entire Challenger 2 inventory to Ukraine.

I’d support Canada sending every damn last one, we should have 80ish Leo 2 available in top or near top spec, and no likelihood of using them. We had some Leo 1 too but they started converting them to gunnery targets over a year ago due to no buyers.

I’m okay with a capability gap so long as we promptly order new Leo or something else.

That could certainly be an option. We'd be without an effective armoured force for a while, but that would only be a liability if e.g. Argentina makes another bid for the Falklands.

How many tanks were needed last time? Since there are no battleships, maybe they can line up tanks on the aircraft carrier for a makeshift battleship.

One man is responsible for the untold thousands upon thousands of deaths he's caused by his word and deed and I really do wonder if Putin is ever going to be taken care of the same way that Mussolini, Qaddafi and Hussein etc. was. Wouldn't it be a very convenient service to the world if Putin decided to send himself to Hell, no stops along the way. And yes, we have our very own warmongering leaders of the past that need to be held accountable but will only pay the price of having their legacies notoriously noted in our history books. Well, that's only if it can escape the re-writes the GOP are making an effort to accomplish. Yeah, I mean you Dick Cheney and those henchmen of yours.

Personally, I'm hoping that his cancer gets him. He'll suffer more that way.
