Some obvious next steps:

1. Cut off SWIFT - have to do this now

I am for all of that but unfortunately it looks like #1 may no longer be on the table, what I heard today anyway. There are Europeans who want to continue getting debt payments, it would also screw over normal banking for Russians who wanted nothing to do with attacking and killing Ukrainians.

Might be a 'nuclear option' of sorts though.

Edit: sorry what others said

If you go in the video when it reads 04:20 on the camera(except look at bottom right camera) that's probably the plane being shot down.

There are a lot of conflicting reports. Could have been a drone or a cruise missile.

Interior Ministry confirmed there are 2 large explosions on video—one shows a Ukrainian Su-27 being shot down by Russian mobile SAMs that are now just a few miles outside the capital.

The 2nd video is purportedly a Russian cruise missile striking a residential area on the outskirts of Kiev. Targeting of civilians (on the kill list?) has begun.

Older people here, can you give a history lesson? Like were republicans this pro Russia during the Cold War. Or only recently because they are following their orange leader and how much he butt kisses Putin?
Cold War was with the Soviet Union.
We were all pretty united on how to treat the Soviet Union.

Russia became a Republican favorite because of gas and oil money from European pipelines.
I repeat Republicans in the Senate and Congress are pro Russia because they have skin in the game.

TBH what surprised me is how well covered this is. All the tweets and other social media. The interviews and cell phone videos. It's kinda crazy
Considering the fog of war, do any of us really know who's actually #winning so far? I'd like to think that Ukraine is inflicting some pain on the invaders, but how much of that is wishful thinking?

I am for all of that but unfortunately it looks like #1 may no longer be on the table, what I heard today anyway. There are Europeans who want to continue getting debt payments, it would also screw over normal banking for Russians who wanted nothing to do with attacking and killing Ukrainians.

The NYT has covered SWIFT a few times this past month. In short, Europe isn't interested partly because it'll make it nearly impossible for them to purchase fossil fuels from Russia. I have no idea if the pipelines through Ukraine will continue to flow, but nobody is really prepared for them to stop. One of the articles talked about how Russia can funnel money through China. Today's article mentioned that Russia has its own electronic banking clearing system that would be pushed into use.

As others have alluded to in this thread, we should seize assets in the West of the oligarchs. Paul Krugman wrote about it today, an astounding amount of wealth they've basically laundered out of Russia and it's all hiding in plain sight.

When asked by a reporter if SWIFT sanctions were still on the table JB said that the sanctions imposed today were worse than SWIFT sanctions.

During the cold war, most people in the U.S. appeared to be united against the USSR for patriotic reasons.

There were instances of longshoremen and other port workers refusing to load grain on ships bound for Russia.

With few exceptions, most in the U.S. sided with Israel as it warred with Egypt and Syria, whose regimes were backed by the Soviets.

I am surprised so many elected Republicans are supporting Putin. But I also believe this is due to lingering hatred for Barack Obama and a strong desire to back policies or global disputes that embarrass or hurt Democrats.

It's funny you mention longshoreman. I was just contemplating Anonymous and the Feds working against a common enemy, how it kind of reminds me of the Feds and the mafia working together in WWII, securing ports at home and then later with invading Sicily.

Repugs have been disgusting, shameful disgraces for years now, I'm not expecting them to stop anytime soon. They openly support fascism over democracy and dutifully mimic Trump's subservience to Putin. Just another litmus test for Team Treason really.

I am guessing its financial. They have interst in Russian money keeping their political coffers full. And maybe some help with election results too.

Don't be so hysterical. Russia isn't going to be stupid enough to attack a NATO country and invoke an Article 5 response.

Is that before or after such a country is a smoldering husk of ruin?
Seems our response time is glacial, and may be counted in months if not years.

Meanwhile, deplorable traitors haven’t changed a bit since Trump lost:

I guess Putin invading a sovereign democracy is ok because he’s doing it with “Christ’s blessing??”

Wow. That lady is scum. So, because Russia is a Christian nation they can declare war, and can kill people?

This lady is SCUM. Its never OK to harm people.

Paul krugman's article:

On NBC nightly news tonight they said "trillions." I did a double take, "did I just hear trillions or was it maybe billions? I backed up 10 seconds... it WAS TRILLIONS! They said that while showing head shots of 3 of those oligarchs. We can freeze that money.

Freeze that money and use it to create a fund for Ukrainian soldiers, civilian casualties, their families, rebuilding civil infrastructure etc.

What the flying fuck is wrong in your brain?

The ONLY thing this will do if fuck over the common citizens of Russia! They are not fuckin Putin!

Rich spoiled children fight wars with their hands tied, playing hero. Those to whom victory was already assured, are free to raise the cost by ignoring options. An actual war to the death is fought with every possible advantage. Getting radiation into Russia, one way or another, would be a very juicy option and possible goal for anyone dying to Russian aggression.

Make no mistake, if Ukraine citizens resist - Russia will carpet bomb them. Cities decimated. As occurred in Syria not long ago. There is nothing immoral about returning the favor.
