I don't really like the way people talk as if this-or-that nation is full of uniquely wicked people.
...
Every complaint I read here about those evil Russians ('they keep invading their neighbors' 'they are exterminating a culture') has applied every bit as much to the US in the not-so-distant past.

The idea that the Russian people are uniquely evil... stems from us stroking our own egos and telling ourselves how great we are. Humans are pretty bad in general.
However, don't be fooled into thinking there isn't a present crisis in Russian institutions instilling a sense of "kill or be killed" among their people. They only despise the war due to its failures. If they were successful at killing every Ukrainian, few Russians would care. Because they have been propagandized and brainwashed into wishing for Genocide.

It may not be uniquely evil, but for present day it is among the worst possible outcomes. Russia is among the worst examples of humanity today.
Yes, equal to our slaughter of the Native Americans. But to simplify the concept for discussion, we changed our policy for the better. Thanks to our institutions we placed a higher value on life, and rights.. of all peoples. We cannot say the same for Russia. They are currently waging a campaign to drive other people off their land. The war crimes and atrocities they are committing to do it would be unconscionable for us to ignore.

We must stand to end these atrocities, even if we ourselves committed them centuries earlier.

I agree with almost all of that. Though I'm not convinced the Russian people are as uniform in their thinking as that. It's hard to tell what people are actually thinking in a situation where it's dangerous to speak out. I suspect people don't even know themselves what they really think, because they dare not let themselves think about it too much.

To be clear, I'm entirely in favour of supporting the Ukrainians as far as possible short of starting a nuclear holocaust. My hope would be that if Russia definitively loses, Putin will go the way that Galtieri did after losing the Falklands war.

My original point was not about Russia anyway, merely an observation that China's attitude to its domestic minorities is not _vastly_ different to what was the case in the US for most of its history (and that maybe that's a feature of being an empire on a contiguous bit of land rather than having overseas colonies, where the exploitation and racism plays out differently - not better, but differently). China just hasn't moved past an earlier stage.

By all accounts we are entering a crucial week in the nearly year-long war. I expect the Putinists to be out in full force on the Intarwebs.

My eyes aren't on Biden, Zelenskyy, NATO/EU allies, or even Putin. My eyes are on Xi Jinping.

Asking the republicans to recognize reality... on even 1 issue, is really a stretch

Their acknowledging reality is being superseded by their pig-headed insistence on resisting, blunting and obstructing any and all things that Biden and the Democrats are doing to help the working class folks of America get a leg up on the economic ladder of success and repairing the relationships with our allies that Trump went way out of his way to break up.

The Repub's support of Putin is a direct result of their obstructionist policies against the Biden admin. They like Putin because he helped the Repubs win the presidency back in '16 and know for a fact that Putin will be there for them any time the Repubs call on him for more assistance. Putin and the Repubs are joined at the hip when it comes to having the nation divided because it serves both their purposes to have the nation in such a weak state of affairs.

If Trump had been reelected, his alliance with Putin would have made things so much easier for Putin to wipe the nation of Ukraine clean off the map. Trump's years as POTUS also gave Putin four more years to improve his grip on Crimea and better prepare for the takeover of Ukraine.

Putin is gonna be pissed Biden upstaged him right before his big address.

Maybe you missed the part where Biden asked Putin for permission to visit Kiev.

The White House would not go into specifics, but national security adviser Jake Sullivan said that it notified Moscow of Biden’s visit to Kyiv shortly before his departure from Washington “for deconfliction purposes” in an effort to avoid any miscalculation that could bring the two nuclear-armed nations into direct conflict.

Biden and Zelenskyy upstaging Putin's speech triggered someone. Imagine the butthurt required to post the above without sarcasm.

Someone with his head up his ass telling others their vision is lacking, haha, priceless!

Napoleon was after/during the time the other European powers were building their overseas empires.
The difference I see is that the countries Napoleon invaded had attacked revolutionary France multiple times immediately prior to getting their asses kicked. If the coalition members had kept their armies in their sleevies, there would likely never have been a Napoleon.

Couple that with two bits of information.
The one year anniversary will soon be upon us, and Russia is BIG on symbolism.
And they recently moved a large number of aircraft closer to the border.

Think the American bombing of Tokyo. Something big is planned, and is likely going to either occur or fail real soon.

Your own damn quote says nothing about permission. You are dishonest, and seem to think people are dense.

Is that a bet you are willing to take?
I have to imagine that attack on Biden will play on either Fox News or Newsmax, if not tonight then this week.
