I agree, my (extremely amateur) guess is they are going to try to retake the coast and cut off Crimea.Cut the bridges and strangle it. Then no amount of preparation will matter. Russia will lose Crimea the moment Ukraine reaches and holds the Azov coast. It might take time, but the outcome would be guaranteed.
To add to what Brovane said, I doubt China would get involved if the US and Russia came to blows. China knows Russia's military is crumbling even against a Ukraninan military that only has indirect support from the US and its allies. China would quickly find itself fighting the US without help, as Russia would be wiped out in short order; and even with sheer numbers in its favor, China's military might not stack up well against the combined forces of the US and all its supporters. That and China would immediately torch economic ties it sorely needs.
