Why do you think you are at Ground Zero?

Berkeley, CA? Lawrence Livermore Berkeley Lab, UC Berkeley, San Francisco. A giant hydrogen bomb dropped over my house would take them all out. I'd imagine an all out nuclear assault would incinerate me pronto.

I know that "ground-zero" feeling.

Even if they don't bother to target New Haven, Groton sub-base/Electric Boat is right up I-95 and NYC is only about 75 miles away.

Putin will try to escape to his secret bunker/fallout shelter in Siberia prior to launching if it happens. Which fortunately I doubt.

Man it looks like Half-Life 2 out there

Interesting article but a two things bothered me. First is that all the pictures were in black and white. Color exists and is ok to use. Black and white has it's placed but is often very much overused.

Also
we left in a column of eight cars. There wasn't any luggage

Yet
There were about 20 Russian checkpoints along the way. They checked our luggage

Was there luggage or no luggage?

Maybe he has something like Leica Q2 Monochrome Reporter camera.
Not having color filters does have some advantages I suppose, I'm sure there are reasons why it's called "Reporter" edition, even if I can't quite see it either.

Hey now. They got Colonel Sergei Sukharev, top paratrooper commander and guy behind the Ukrainian massacre at IIovaisk. No slouch, one of Putin's more effective leaders. A lot of Russians looked up to this guy. I bet that one felt satisfying to a lot of Ukrainians. As it should. He murdered Ukrainians who had already surrendered, so fuck him and I'm glad he's dead.

there's really not anything at LL as far as I recall...worth targeting for this purpose. It's history, really, and whatever reactivity is there is, maybe you know or don't know--I don't know--would only be a target to "make things worse in s small area-- that's certainly possible, but it would honestly be a waste of Russian potential. Their "potential" honestly seems really weak right now.

Still, you live in world tech central. Brain-wise, anyway. There would be a statement, that everyone would see, about nuking nearby SV, and it would sure be considered a war crime unlike no other. They would nuke Apple and for that, the world in this day probably would not stand for that. But yeah, I can see how everything there is a knowledge/human advancement and progress target. It would be on point for Putin.

...in that light, I suggest you "turn your key" for once and get your ass through the tunnel and over to Orinda or Napa or the other side of the mountain wall from where the fallout will land, about 20 miles south of that.

Too bleak?

Don't worry. I'm like 4 miles from flat, swampy DC. I'm not worried. And therefore, you're being ridiculous.

Home made drones with thermal imaging are doing good business

archived Times article below

I don't like the one image that they show. It's a different number of destroyed units from those deployed, between the two images--you can maybe interpret them to be the same, but it requires "Story creating" by the reader...and also, tanks and infantry lined up are also on the opposite side of the road of the image of the destroyed units, that are supposed to be them.

Don't like it. Needs better data.

Time to party like it’s 1914.

yeah that is some wild imagery. It also tells me that their only back-up/basic training was to simply fortify and wait?

They have no plan to retreat, I guess, which means UK needs to counterattack quickly and prevent most of their line from fortifying...which I dunno. How is that really possible at this point?

It seems that UK can still push through enough breakpoint to prevent circling of Kyiv and other major cities, some occupied which are also being liberated, and if major counterattack operations that are being reported are real...I'm not sure how a backup plan to dig in and fortify is going to work.

The air is still bad for RU. Yeah, we're seeing the remnant of an RU trench encampment, which means that one didn't win, but it still tells us that this is how their front is responding. They don't plan to leave. They don't really have another option...or they really just don't fucking know what to do right now.

It looks like UK can still push through some of these posts and instead of destroying all of them, just fan out behind them and make sure that they can't complete the circle, but also destroy all the supply, and artillery that is getting close to them.

Build the Caesar wall between 2 enemy fronts again, and of the same army. But if only one side of that army that you face is supply, how can you not win quickly?

But, UK needs to push them back to Belarus I think. They can't just rest if they think RU is fortifying. I hope they can keep pushing them and working on the border crossings.

They don't plan to leave

Word has it, Russians have men in the rear whose sole job is to shoot and kill ANY of their own men if they are deemed to be retreating.
Don't know how accurate that is, but it does seem logical that Putin only gave Russians one choice. To die.

iirc the eastern lines in the donbas region went trench several years ago. a news report (i think) described what was going on over there almost like WWI, no one was using recent vehicles on the front and it was all barbed wire (which got moved every night) and trenches.

I'm fully aware of that but the injection of these videos into threads isn't being done by those soldiers and witnesses, it's being done by people who were not there in person, and I'm saying that them adding their choice of music or sound effects (which is worse) is reprehensible.

It's a very small issue in the scheme-of-things, but I agree with you. People have complained about this in the past in relation to the "proper media" not just internet videos. Supposedly serious news-outlets putting inappropriately-trivializing music over real news or documentary footage.

Anyway I can never be bothered to turn the sound on for most of these things (just too much effort to turn the speakers on and fiddle with the volume to avoid disturbing the neighboursj, what with the walls here lacking all sound-insulation).

I read something interesting about how Putin gutted his own army out of fear it could overthrow him, and this is the result.

Where did you read that? I haven't seen that claim. Though it's an interesting historical echo of Stalin if true.

Russian rulers have been careful to ensure the Russian army was kept well away from political power since the days of Timoshenko (or do I mean Tukhachevsky?)

I think they are showing stalled tanks low on fuel in the top image and the convoy of supply trucks destroyed by drones below. But I agree whether the two are directly connected is unverifiable essentially.

He said: "I know that it's the instinct of the people of this country, like the people of Ukraine, to choose freedom, every time. I can give you a couple of famous recent examples.
"When the British people voted for Brexit in such large, large numbers, I don't believe it was because they were remotely hostile to foreigners.
"It's because they wanted to be free to do things differently and for this country to be able to run itself."

He really does come out with some utter nonsense at times. He does it in a different, more articulate, way to Trump, but it is, nonetheless, drivel.

There's also a similarity between how Trump would always, no matter what the supposed subject of the speech, go back to talking about his "triumph" in beating Hilary, and the way Boris, on every occasion, will shoehorn in a reference to Brexit.

Forgetting bojo, but on the topic of EU membership . Does Europe (the EU) really want to join the war against Russia ?
Seems as though the topic of EU member and NATO member already discussed.
An EU member state being under attack means that the EU is obliged to give direct aid ?

TBH, these videos of the war with heavy metal background music rub me the wrong way entirely. I'm OK with the music but not as background to these videos. War should NOT be entertainment and I automatically suspect at least the intentions if not the integrity of anyone doing this multimedia treatment of this war. I've only seen/heard this stuff for about 2 days now, all, I think, on Twitter threads.

Like I said, the youth of today have not a clue as to what a real world war would look like. The first time their cell phones quit working because of mass outages, they'd be jumping out of windows and slitting their wrists.

When I see pictures of Mars I still imagine a Mars once alive and vibrant as is the earth of today, then the technology of war went terribly terribly wrong and the Mars of today could be the earth of tomorrow. Steven Spielberg needs to make a movie about THAT.
