Or could Putin be looking for a way out of the war that will play nice with the internal opinion polls? He is facing huge pressures atm.
  • "... being purposefully snubbed by the few remaining allies, Sweden and Finland joining NATO, increasing domestic criticism from nationalist hard-liners, being forced to make 10% cuts to state expenditure, regional security in Central Asia and the Caucasus unravelling." - source
  • "The protest among elected officials in #Russia calling for Putin to resign, is still growing, albeit slowly. Among the latest to put his name to the list is Tomsk councillor Artyom Kanarev. About 70 have now signed the document." - source
  • "Alla Pugacheva, the legendary Russian crooner, speaks out against "the death of our boys for illusory goals that are making our country a pariah and weighing down on the lives of our citizens." Losing the faith of nationalist bloggers is one thing. But losing Alla Borisovna...

This puts the Kremlin in a tight spot. Leave this unanswered and you risk letting public criticism spiral. But Alla Pugacheva is something like a cross between Oprah and the Pope in Russia – a pretty much universally loved figure" - source
In the last twitter thread, a commenter said this - "The story is repeated by Kremlin-friendly media, so might be an unofficial climbdown opportunity for Putin (along with the Erdogan and Modi "begging Russia")" - source.

Could Putin show 'wisdom' and 'benevolence' and allow good Russian sons to return to their families? Maybe Ukraine is not worth the fight if it allows China into the Russian East. Maybe the gas pipelines will be turned back on to show Christmas warmth and love to Europe.

But selling such a story with such a crazy high cost both in men, reputation and ofcause cash and assets.... wow.

Seems to me the easiest way out is another Russian "Swan Lake moment," and as the smoke clears purported Putin health issues are explained as the cause of regime change, concomitant withdrawal from Ukraine, other shoes to drop by and by.

Russia could be stoking up the scare factor. Will a frighten public support full mobilisation?

I’m genuinely confused about the whole ‘will Russia mobilize’ thing. Say they announce full mobilization tomorrow. What will they arm them with?

Lyman has been attacked for days now, the Russians have dug in and are defending. Not saying that something will not suddenly break but after the the rout, the UA forces moved into regions better defended and between consolidating gains and meeting stiff resistance they stalled out again.

And Russian forces are still attacking and making slow, grinding progress on that front with artillery support.

They “attack” daily farther south but make basically no progress. Russians are stuck in a defensive posture basically everywhere.

Seems unlikely. For one thing the war is not popular in Russia. Most want to ignore it. The Kremlin is manning its military with the homeless, prisoners, mercs, the aging. They aren't in a position to properly arm or train. Mobilization will only make Putin less popular.

Small arms backed by artillery most likely, if they went this route. Not a path to any kind of quick success.
Yeah, one primary reported Russian "tactic" on the eastern front is send in a couple squads of conscript infantry to probe Ukrainian positions (armed with small arms only), mark down locations they get gunned down from & follow up with artillery on those positions. Rinse-repeat. (Until they run out of conscripts, or they take the next trench line).

This has run into some problems lately as Ukrainian counter-batter fire has become a lot more responsive as more US supplied radars got into service. Even the Russians admit that they have to relocate their guns frequently now which limits their effectiveness.

In a few months the Russians will declare they've eliminated more NASAMS launchers than the manufacturer has ever produced.
Yep, and the Russians have already shot down all of Ukraine's air force - more than twice. (They must get bonus lives or something)

You just need to consult Russian primary training materials to answer that:
"One out of tow gets a rifle, one without follows him"

You may argue that is not their premier training film. But the very next river crossing scene:

has been reenacted in Ukraine:
warning: video below shows what happens when an airburst munition hits a motorized bridge full of orcs* who take a while to finish dying
*speculated to be wagner pmc reinforcing Kherson over the Dnipro river

Such cessation of combat scenarios are perhaps out of sync with postulated UKR endgames and fairly implausable in any case. In light of the devilish savagery and illegal combat exhibited by this RU army and the international codemnation of the regime, Zelinsky will I suspect accept nothing less as conditions for discussions than the complete surrender/removal of the RU army from UKR and then, besides the usual remedies like reparations etc. , demand ultimately the delivery of Pukin and his most obvious cronies to the ICC. There will be pressure to compromise on the latter satisfaction but I suspect Zelinsky is confident enough to carry through with military operations until UKR has its security enhanced by dealing Putin an end he richly deserves.
LSS: The war has moved out of Pukin's control. There is no "retirement' in sight even if he comes out with his hands up ( highly unlikely)
Its time for UKR to put Moscow on notice to this effect.
