In regard to the referendums being hastily done -

Some basic analysis of how things may change for soldiers in the event Russia formally annexes currently occupied territories even without full mobilization.
- Russia will be able to send regular conscripts to serve on occupied territories (without participating in combat). Not that they didn't do this as is, but they'll be able to ramp it up under a fully legal pretense.
- Contract soldiers can be sent to fight on annexed territories without their say. Again, didn't stop anyone from sending a bunch of people to 'military games' in the first days of the war, but if then some soldiers managed to not go, and then go to court and win, when they were branded as deserters, now they'll have zero recourse.
- Soldiers won't receive any bonuses/per diem for being deployed abroad. May or may not happen, but without another law addressing this, they'll be downgraded to regular pay, as if they serve somewhere in Voronezh

If Putin announces mobilization (even partially) and annexation that is likely to have a direct effect on the size of the Ukraine aid being considered for the upcoming continuing resolution. Current ask is $12B more and its got the votes. This would almost certainly increase with additional provocative moves from Moscow.

Hopefully their shells work better than their drones.
I thought it was ironic Russia has to use old North Korean ammunition stock, while Ukraine gets the newly made Iranian ammo.

We do need to convert Ukraine over to NATO though. It turns out our stuff is just better.

Realistically it's going to take a couple years to produce sufficient guns to replace their soviet era stocks. Reportedly they really like the 105mm M119/L119 guns they received so I assume they'll buy licensed copies at some point to replace the 122mm soviet tubes.

When do we start using some of that $300B in frozen assets to fund this?

Strange things afoot in Russia. Lots of rumors swirling today.

I am seeing a unconfirmed rumor men 18 to 65 being prohibited from leaving the country.

Looks like @whyitso will get to find out what it is to "win" the Russian lottery. I wonder if he will be the one to get the Mosin–Nagant, or the one to get the ammo?

If the rumors are true, he will be able to reenact this scene in real life:

The question is, will he be cut down by his "nazis", or by the commissioners from his own government?

Are these not Russian donations?

They've been seen before the latest offensive so it would seem to argue against it. Some people think these are possibly intercepted Houthi supplies but the logistics (sheer weight) are problematic and they haven't been seen before there.

Most likely explanation is the CIA has a go between country purchasing large quantities of shells from Iran and are shipping them to Ukraine.
