Or could Putin be looking for a way out of the war that will play nice with the internal opinion polls? He is facing huge pressures atm.
  • "... being purposefully snubbed by the few remaining allies, Sweden and Finland joining NATO, increasing domestic criticism from nationalist hard-liners, being forced to make 10% cuts to state expenditure, regional security in Central Asia and the Caucasus unravelling." - source
  • "The protest among elected officials in #Russia calling for Putin to resign, is still growing, albeit slowly. Among the latest to put his name to the list is Tomsk councillor Artyom Kanarev. About 70 have now signed the document." - source
  • "Alla Pugacheva, the legendary Russian crooner, speaks out against "the death of our boys for illusory goals that are making our country a pariah and weighing down on the lives of our citizens." Losing the faith of nationalist bloggers is one thing. But losing Alla Borisovna...

This puts the Kremlin in a tight spot. Leave this unanswered and you risk letting public criticism spiral. But Alla Pugacheva is something like a cross between Oprah and the Pope in Russia – a pretty much universally loved figure" - source
In the last twitter thread, a commenter said this - "The story is repeated by Kremlin-friendly media, so might be an unofficial climbdown opportunity for Putin (along with the Erdogan and Modi "begging Russia")" - source.

Could Putin show 'wisdom' and 'benevolence' and allow good Russian sons to return to their families? Maybe Ukraine is not worth the fight if it allows China into the Russian East. Maybe the gas pipelines will be turned back on to show Christmas warmth and love to Europe.

But selling such a story with such a crazy high cost both in men, reputation and ofcause cash and assets.... wow.
How has this woman not fallen out of a 20 story window yet??

On the US political front, less positive news, Ukraine war aid may very well be frozen if the Repubs win the House (and associated purse strings):

Chris Murphy’s warning: A GOP House would defund the Ukraine struggle
Gifted Washington post article as subscriber: https://wapo.st/3qXGpDG

Senior House Republicans specifically refuse to commit to continuing aid to Ukraine if they get control of House, and conservative media (Fox and friends) has been very heavily and frequently bashing the Ukrainian aid:

What do you expect? When you say stupid shit like "little more than a proxy war" when in fact Ukraine is fighting for its right to exist do you not expect some blowback?
The alternative is a world war then it won't be "little more than a proxy war." But I admit I see your point, it didn't cross my mind the audience would be sitting on sand and forming pearls in their cooches. I should have accounted for many here getting their cycles synchronized -- it is P&N, after all.

This is why I'd slide $30B in the CR instead of $12B. McConnell would agree to it. This would sustain US military aid to Ukraine for at least another year and a half.

Protests throughout Russia. Although authoritarian rule will likely take care of them.

Mobilization was avoided because it was going to create a lot of friction internally in Russia. Were I a dictator with a dwindling military strength I probably would not do this. Many of Russia's best units have been obliterated in Ukraine and if there were significant internal issues Moscow would have a lot fewer resources to respond with.

Damn, a single pearl will make me more wealthy than 99% of Russia. Thanks?

Oh, look, the Bezos owned left leaning newspaper is saying doom and gloom if those evil R people get power. Even though support has been a strong bipartisan vote and most questions are on tracking/accountability and many are calling for more aid. Almost zero want to cut aid.

Doesn't the lend lease reduce the need for future funding?

The act mostly expedites transfers AFAIK. Anyway a lot of what Ukraine needs are consumables (shells, small arms ammunition/grenades, mortar rounds, drones, GMLRS ammunition, ATGMs, ASMs, etc) which either have to come out of existing US/NATO stockpiles or increasingly purchased directly from various suppliers.

Lend lease for Ukraine runs through September 2023, while it gives President Biden quite a bit of flexibility, the associated activities still have to be funded - which a GQP MAGA House could block (e.g. transport costs, replacement of depleted stocks)

Round them up, give them guns, and call them soldiers. I'm sure they'll only use them against Ukraine...

They don’t get the guns until they’ve cleared the border!

Biden missed a great opportunity to make the case for removing Russia’s seat on the Permanent/Security Council at the UN.

Appears the biggest impact from Putin's announcement is likely the mandatory (and indefinite) extension of the contract period for current soldiers, which otherwise should have been rotating out in large numbers as their contract terms expire.

Of course, that's not going to help his popularity with the troops any.

(Edit: bringing back 40 year old reservists that last saw training 20+ years ago, isn't going to help anytime soon other than as more cannon fodder)

Well they will rotate out in a sense. Dead could be considered rotating out.

At this point if you are a young Russian would you rather be detained trying to overthrow your government or get sent to Ukraine in the winter to die?

This partial mobilization and upcoming referendum is just a pre-text for full mobilsation. I suspect they still allow open borders so that they have less political enemies when they go all in.

Or just outright bail and not look back.

Between 10's of thousands of dead men in their prime and fleeing citizens that are able, good fucking luck sustaining a country long term.
