how exactly does a jet bolter(miss the cables) and continue flying foward without getting sucked into the giant fan pulling everything down? i demand a congressional oversight investigation in to this deranged contractor.

trapeze recovery is clearly the way to go.

Aren't quinjets VTOL?
according to impdb.org they had harriers (vtol), f-35b(vtol), and dassault-dornier alpha jets(fixed wing). so they would have to ground the alpha jets whenever they were in the air, which seems a little wasteful. but i suspect the alpha was only there because it was the only non-cg thing they could afford to rent for filming.

Reportedly the US is going to provide AIM-7s in the next arms package but the platform for them is unspecified. While older and less sophisticated there is a large amount of these missiles that have to be closing in on disposal age so cost is minimal. Could be Mig-29s or the Buk I guess.

Do you mean the RIM-7 Sea Sparrow?

I know that if I was given a choice between having my country run by the Russian gangsters that rule it now or a coalition of European countries I would pick the coalition of European countries without hesitation. Surely Russian citizens see that the standard of living in the West is so much better than the one given to them by Putin?!

The oligarchs and leadership certainly see the standard of living is much better in the west. That's why they all send their children to western universities, they vacation in the west, and they keep their megayachts in western ports.

I think at this point, Vlad should be focusing more on finding a safe exit for himself and family than his Ukrainian 'special op'.

Sounds like Russia is declaring war on Nato:

Btw the article has something i missed about the drone attack on Moscow - it targeted the wealthy...

looks like mini putin is itching to find out. wouldn't be surprised if an oligarch sporting a more developed sense of self-preservation windows wee putin just to shut him the fuck up.

Here's some greater detail on the "leaf" mines Russia is using in Ukraine. Landmines would be a blessing by comparison.

I get why Ukraine would strike Moscow with kamikaze drones days after they attacked Kyiv with kamikaze drones. And also why they struck wealthy areas, to undermine support among the "oligarchs" for the war.

But the action makes me a little queazy. I feel like it's another thing that could lead to the widening and/or escalation of this conflict.

Similar thoughts. Is this a nuking of Japan rubicon in WWII that is needed to finally shift political winds in Russia? Or what Russia is looking for to just fully unload?

Escalate to what exactly? Use of nukes or chemical weapons will draw in NATO which is the worst possible thing for them now.

Euro mood seems to be that Moscow is an entirely legitimate target and not even the Germans are really uneasy about it.

Escalate to what? Are they going to hit more hospitals and elementary schools? If you're talking about nukes/chemical weapons, that would pull in NATO and they'd be done.

What makes me uneasy is the different messaging from the UK and the USA. Up until now everyone has been singing from the same hymn book, I really hope there isn't a crack that Russian propaganda can't exploit.

I understand, but theres a line between pulling punches so as to not escalate while also calling their bluff and strengthening your own position. Im of a mind to push the latter, and ukraine has to play to win as losing is not an option. Im ok with this tit for tat as part of the strategy. I think the belgorod incursion was brilliant. Where is putins line on pushing the red button? I dont think anyone really knows but we have to edge right up to it to break him.

I don't really have an answer other than... we have never really seen Putin truly painted into a corner like this. I don't really know what to expect.

I will say, right now Russia feels like it's playing an old school RTS where it's just sitting around waiting for some unit to get built and then sending it out as soon as it can to get slaughtered. It has no ability to amass anything of meaningful striking power.

Yes he is in a corner; he has pretty much already lost given the amount of equipment that has been destroyed and yet he cannot afford to suffer a loss - so what does he do ? If ukraine actions rally additional support against putin at (russia) home; that can only help I think of course the strategy could backfire. From ukraine perspective they do care about their losses (I'm not sure Putin does) so they really don't want the war to drag out even if they do eventually 'win'.

I'm not saying the strategy is a good one or the correct one but I do think they are trying to rally support against putin as oppose to tit-for-tat approach which does them little good.
