Russia threatens U.S. over possible sanctions

A hard-line Putin adviser says Moscow could take drastic measures that would cripple the U.S. economy.

Russia could reduce to zero its economic dependency on the United States if Washington agreed sanctions against Moscow over Ukraine, a Kremlin aide said on Tuesday, warning that the American financial system faced a "crash" if this happened.

Russian firms and banks would also not return loans from American financial institutions, he said.

"An attempt to announce sanctions would end in a crash for the financial system of the United States, which would cause the end of the domination of the United States in the global financial system," he added.

Lol Putin. His oligarch overlords (who have investments all over the world) will reign him in long before something like that happens.

Wow Russia is really going nuts on this.

For those that were not big history buffs read the reasons why WW2 and even WW1 started. I don't think we are there yet but this is looking a lot like Cuba missile all over again. Could be another blip in history or a very large dark stain.

If this happened to be true (which it appears not to be), that would mean Russia is panicking.

They are vastly more dependent on the US than the US is on them. They lose any sanctions war.

One thing Putin has is a very good working knowledge of power. Obama does not. Putin is not panicking, he is taking advantage of his strength, relative to our apparent weakness.

Obama and Kerry are fools. Russia is not dependent on the US, however Europe IS dependent on Russia.

I can't possibly fathom what you're basing this on. It seems like wishful thinking combined with partisanship. If you look at Obama's foreign policy record he has been quite successful, with the notable exception of Syria. Putin's actions here are likely screwing Russia long term, I feel it is likely that he is just in a bad spot where he feels like he can't do anything else.

Regardless, Russia is also far more dependent on Europe than Europe is on Russia. While some sort of embargo would damage the European economy through significantly higher energy prices, those same energy sales comprise a huge portion of an already teetering Russian economy as well as approximately half of Russia's government budget. Trade is a two way street.

Putin simply can't afford to engage in protracted economic warfare with Europe over Crimea as in relatively short order he won't have enough cash to keep troops in Crimea.

Which would be why Europe, including the UK is so vocal in their support of the Obama right? lol

So once again the ball is in Putin's court after a thorough scolding... What do you think he will do?

So I assume you're conceding that Europe has been vocal in their support of Obama now? Not sure how you missed all that.

The ball won't be in Putin's court, the US and Europe will start sanctioning Russia. I'm interested to see how toothy those sanctions are. That will say a lot.

It will send a msg how toothy they are imo. If they lack teeth expect more expansion into Ukraine imo. I think we need to nip this in the ass right now before he rolls right up to Poland.

Vocal, no. However it will be interesting to see how Merkel handles this now that she has drawn some lines. The UK I will let you know in a week after they do something. To be honest I am more curious how France reacts.

http://www.worldbulletin.net/news/130169/france-still-considering-warship-deal-with-russia

The crisis in Ukraine has not so far reached the point that the French government is considering halting the sale of assault warships to Russia, French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said on Monday.

So you suspect sanctions will go into effect and force Putin to submit, I say if it goes that far we have already lost... And then the question is how much do we care.

Putin sees the USA reducing our military and it just sends a message that we are all chickens and will do nothing. Meanwhile everywhere in Europe, Russian Oil is on sale. If I was a terrorist, I would attack their oil industry. That would cripple both the EU and the Russians but that is their problem.

With certain nations in the EU tied closely to Russian natural gas, it will be hard to lay down too many sanctions without the Russian's threatening to turn off the pipes. What is great about this is that we pretty much have an economic MAD situation here. Instead of having to send in troop or horde bombs, the world economy is so interlinked that anything that disrupts the economy will devastate nations.

Which is why Russia and France are playing coy. Russia will get what they want and the US, UK and Germany have already lost.
Funny aside, if Europe got it's energy from LFTR's it would be immune to Russia's will...

I wouldn't be so cocky if I were you. Europe MIGHT do something significant, but your link to Merkel is lacking in depth.

Don't bet the farm.

He's hoping to wait out the referendum. At that point Russia will probably redraw their border.

After that they'll probably hold and start bidding on Ukraine's loyalty again.

Absent that proposal there wasn't going to be any military intervention. Same stance we've had since the 50s.

Unless I'm forgetting any Republican administration sending troops into a Soviet state or adjoining Russian country.

Didn't think so

We're not getting into a shooting war over this.
