Video clip now playing on news services. The shooter made clear what his intentions were and the fact that he was going to die for the act.

This a day before a previously scheduled meeting between Russia and Turkey.

Timing is everything.

Can we leave out the "Islam is inherently evil and must be destroyed" crap, please? We don't know many details, and this strikes me more as a geopolitical incident than anything. Keep the religious crusades in the Middle Ages where they belong.

This isn't an islamist thing. I really find nothing that objectionable. It is a political assassination, which is fair game. What is not fair game is targeting civilians. Since Russia is involved in the bombing of Syria, it is fair game to assassinate the diplomat. In fact, I would have more respect for Islam if they did more targeted assassinations of government officials instead of attacking random people on the street.

This is one of the best photos of an assassin I've ever seen. Now, Turkey is a NATO country and Russia is not. This could lead to something unpleasant indeed. Good thing HRC is not in charge.

Kind of seems to be in retaliation for the situation in Aleppo (at least based on the gunman's supposed statements immediately after the shooting). Not what I'd deem as something related to religion.

Or, they hate Russia for their freedom?

The killer was a Turkish Policemen 22 years old, according to witnesses he spoke about Aleppo in Syria.

He was also killed by the police.

This is not good, Turkey is in a bad state the last months.

On a tangent...the (high) quality of the photos is really bothering me. It's almost like it's staged, like a play or something. Modern technology boggles my mind sometimes...someone halfway around the world is killed & within minutes, we have crystal-clear HD photos of the event.

Unless the killer was the security provided by the police, but i would expect the Russian ambassador to have his own security men with him at all time.

In this case, it's strictly circumstantial. It's a well-lit gallery, and an experienced AP photographer happened to be attending the event. No doubt the shooter was counting on the high profile to draw attention to what he was doing. Sucks that the media almost has to play into what he wanted, but I'm not going to blame them for documenting what happened as best they can -- it's their job.

Yes it seams like he was the local security but i would expect the Russian Ambassador to Turkey at the current time (tensions with Russia, bombing attacks, ISIS retaliations vs Russian Air Strikes etc) to have his own security.
