Anyone ever notice this is said like...every generation?

It's stated when you have a midrange card that is a generation old. It's never wise to upgrade every generation except for those extreme edge cases.

Next refresh is not going to come out before Q2 2017, so a long, long time to wait, if it was just 2-3 months, it might make sense, but its over 6 months before you see refreshes and in all likelihood they are going to be just as expensive as the new mid range cards are now due to limited availability.

The 780 is actually not a good GPU. It has aged terribly, so I don't know why it is being compared to the 780 Ti. Most websites don't even include the 780 in comparison charts, so it is hard to show how bad it is, but it is *well* below a 290 these days. I believe Sweclockers phased out their 780 last year during spring. TPU no longer include it in their charts either.

A 480 would not be a "sidegrade". Not even close. A 1060 even less so.

So this is the real problem with this entire thread. The issue here is not the 480, it's that your national market is garbage.

If you pay 350 euros for a 480 then your prices are fucked up. Here in Sweden, the asking price for non-ref 480s are around 260-280 euros.

Thus, the problem isn't the 480 in your case, so I don't know why you whine about it in your title of this thread. The problem is your internal market. INB4 "yes but all prices are local". I know. But I'm just pointing out the illogical/incoherent title. OP is blaming 480 in the title. He should have written it "I live in country with a shit-tier national price market. Let me whine about it".

Those two new cards are about as fast as a GTX 980. Would you personally upgrade from those three for no more than that much extra performance? I really think one should aim a little higher if they're going to go to that trouble and expense. I did NOT say it was a sidegrade. There was a qualifier statement before that word.

Listen to what YBS1 is saying as you can see, he is presently running both GTX 780 Classifieds and a RX 480. He is able to run the same game and compare.

I also owned a GTX 780 Classified and it is still working well for my son-in-law in his FX8350 rig. I paid a lot more for it than I did for my Reference RX480 (actually got it for $239.99).

Compared to my GTX 1080 and GTX 980 TI the RX 480 is slower BUT it feels fast on a 1920x1080 monitor and for the price is an outstanding card.

Fair enough I wasn't upset about the card but the unfair prices our value tax causes. 240 dollars for a RX 480? Yeah sure. PC gaming is cheaper in other countries. The fact that I'm running an old card on a 1080p monitor would make the 480 a good upgrade because I could run newer games at better fps and try out DX 12 in games. That would be fine. Right now at these prices, a mid-range upgrade doesn't make any sense in my country.

I think your comparison isn't a very fair one. You have an older top tier card and you're looking to "upgrade" two tiers down - granted prices this generation are considerably more than before, but anything short of the same tier upgrade is really a side grade - say you get the 1070, are you going to go for upgrade to the 60's for the next gen? The 50's the one after that?
