RYZEN 3 2200G budget build

My current desktop is running on fumes (4gigs ddr2, gtx 260, Phenom II x4 940, 64 gig ssd) and is in desperate need of upgrades.

Since I'm trying to keep the price down, the 2200G looks like a good alternative, at least to hold me over until video card prices come back down to earth.

I can recycle my old case and Power supply, so I should only need the cpu, motherboard, ram, and ssd.

From old PC
- Corsair 650-Watt TX Series 80 Plus Certified Power Supply
- Antec 900 Case

New parts
- AMD RYZEN 3 2200G - $99
- ASRock A320M-HDV AM4 Micro ATX AMD Motherboard - $38 )w/ combo deal)
- WD Blue 3D NAND 250GB PC SSD M.2 2280 - $79
- Ballistix Sport LT 8GB (2 x 4GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 2400 - $95

Total upgrade costs around $330 with Tax.

Any thoughts, advice? I haven't been paying much attention to gaming hardware lately (other than GPU and RAM prices are out of control) and put this together without much research, so all input is appreciated.

No overclocking needed btw.
Moderate 1080p gaming

Thanks

Stick with a B350 motherboard. 1080p on a 2200G is going to be pushing it unless you're only playing older games. Since you're going to be using the onboard GPU, I'd recommend going with faster memory. Also, if your current power supply is as old as the rest of your system, I'd highly recommend a new one.

That would be my best advice too, if you intend to game at all on the APU. Reason being is, you can't overclock the iGPU clock speeds on an A320 board, but many 2200G APUs will OC to 1500Mhz or 1600Mhz iGPU clocks, which greatly enhances their ability to play games. (When paired up with faster dual-channel DDR4 as well.)

I would also look for DDR4-2933 or 3000 RAM too, it's not much more than $10-20 more, but should greatly increase (well, maybe 10%, maybe more with iGPU OC) frame-rates.

So, $20-30 more for a B350 board that supports OC, and $10-20 more for DDR4-2933/3000/3200 RAM. Can you possibly afford that?

If this were just an office/browser box, with no gaming involved, then the above suggestions would be moot.

Depending on what you mean by "moderate", you may be slightly disappointed by the 2200G. (*)

(*) Based on comments I hear in another thread about it.

I have a 2400G en-route, and while I don't own GTA V, nor will I be testing it with many games (Ok, I own Skyrim Vanilla), I will attempt some head-to-head browser benchmark action with my ITX i3-8100 rig.

For 1080p gaming, I would go for the 2400G with some fast memory. But depending on the games the OP, wants to play, he may have to lower the graphical setting for decent framerates.

Not only that the A320 won't be able to overclock. Which you should since it's free performance. The Pro4 is not too expensive and it's pretty good.

Shouldn't the OP have a HDD for storage? A 250GB SSD will not be able to hold much.

Go for the i3-8100 build. At least they WORK. I've been trying all afternoon, with two different brands of motherboards, to get my 2400G into sufficient shape as to be able to install windows 10 with it. No dice so far.

Edit: Finally got my 2400G working in Windows 10, on my Gigabyte B350 Gaming 3 micro-ATX board. Took quite a bit of work though, as it didn't ship with a Raven Ridge compatible BIOS, and those stock Ryzen heatsinks require four screws, and some patience, to get them on and off. AM2/AM3 mounting was still better, IMHO. Well, "easier", maybe not "better" as far as cooling goes.

Anyways, cannot recommend ASRock motherboards for 2200G/2400G yet, until they get their BIOS / UEFI development act together.

Recommend Gigabyte, or MSI, quite frankly.

Maybe wait for 400-series AMD chipset boards, which will have newer, Raven Ridge and probably Pinnacle Ridge compatible UEFIs. Unless you really like "bloody knuckles", from beating on older boards trying to get them to work, with BIOS/UEFI updates/patches.

Thanks. Any idea when the 400 chipset boards are expected out?

I think I will go with a 350 or wait for a 400 series board with the 2400G. Along with DDR4-3000. I'm trying to keep my budget around $400. That will leave me some room for a discrete video card in the future IF prices drop.

As for games. 1080p at medium is the goal. I understand I wont be able to play some of the latest games, but I'm hoping to play some older games like titanfall 2, GTAV, Rise of the Tomb Raider. Although looking at some benches, ROTTR might need to be bumped down to 720p.

I did forget to mention I have a couple 750 gig drives I can swap out from my old system for storage. so they should hold me over.

1080P Med? On GTA V and ROTTR? You might be somewhat disappointed. (Just sayin'. I would hesitate to call those "older games", I consider them to be part of the current crop of games myself.)

The OP might be able to play GTA V on 1080p set to low, but with ROTTR, I doubt it.
