I disagree that that's the only possible reasoning. One of the major considerations for AMDs pricing is Intel's pricing. And as mentioned already, it's believed AMD didn't anticipate this much demand and did not want to sit on unsold inventory.

Been saying this for months. 3900X is a $500 SKU, the 3950X is a $750 SKU at MSRP, of course. I think AMD looked at the market and thought the take rate for these would be lower than their more mainstream processors. How often did we hear of people buying a $750 Intel SKU? It makes sense.

In just three generations of processors, AMD has shown people they can compete and even destroy the competition in certain segments. I suspect Ryzen 4000 will be easier to buy than Ryzen 3000 at launch.

If you assume a lengthy lead time, it's hard to figure out how something would perform sales wise. Say 7 months in advance. Who would have known how popular the 3900X would be at launch in July? Few. Even I was skeptical of how sought after it would be.


Though I suppose it doesn't matter. We've been told a 9900K beats a 64 core Epyc processor in Windows when it comes to microseconds or even milliseconds. If you know, you know.

I got back from lunch and knocked out a few tasks at work and then refreshed this thread; I don't think I've ever clicked open a new tab to search and buy something on Amazon as fast as I just did after reading your comment here.

Looks like I'll be saying that I upgraded from a 3960x to a 3950x

Its still available. This is the longest its been available from anybody, let alone one of the worlds largest retailers, and at MSRP !

I would say the 3950 shortage is over. The 3900x shortage was longer, but now they are are available at MSRP widely. (well at least available easily)

Thankfully I was able to score mine on New Years Eve at Best Buy online. Even got 10% off for my birthday. Will be a nice upgrade. Normally I have been an “Intel Guy” but these new processors made me choose AMD.

Hope you're right. Back in March 2017, they oversold the heck out of x370 motherboards and then couldn't deliver. They wasted a lot of people's time. It was pretty frustrating.

I'd trust them is I was in the hunt for a 3950x.

Looking at the bundle with the Kraken X62 it's showing as available on the 4th. If you then click the Kraken link from the bundle it's in stock. My conclusion is they're getting 3950x stock on the 4th which would explain the ships in 1-2 days.
