Looks like 3.03 is taking its toll, nice that we're still outproducing groups around us. Thanks for the stats, HB.

Yep, 3.03 is here. It really put a hit in my production. Kinda frustrating but I guess we'll have to live with it.

BTW, some more bad news for our numbers... My buddy at another branch, rleach2 removed the SETI client from all PC's that are in use by end users in his office. He got tired of questions about the SETI client and people blaming their own errors on it. You know, Excel crashes or they have a printing problem. That's related to SETI right? Sheez...

He wasn't looking forward to another client upgrade either. I think the SETI crew may have made an error by releasing a newer client that returns lower production. I understand that it does more analysis but wouldn't it make more sense to lower the WU size so it takes about the same amount of time as the 3.0 clients? Oh well, what do I know.

Thanks Hellburner!

3rd!!! Thx HB.

Sorry to hear about rleach! Ignorant Users are a REAL drag but I understand how he feels. I was starting to get burned out on the questions myself.

one of the problems the SETI crew was trying to mitigate was that their servers were getting slammed; by downshifting the clients, even a little, they bought themselves some time to find a real solution (HW upgrades, more succinct reporting, whatever)

just a guess,

G.

beloved patriot: I understand they had a bandwidth problem but there was another answer that would keep the production stats about equal...

They make the client do more analysis, thus slowing it down and decreasing the amount of WU's being uploaded and downloaded to their servers so they save bandwidth. I understand that. But, why not break the WU's into smaller chunks so that completion times are about the same? I've found that my production with 3.03 is about 66% of what it was with 3.0. If the WU's were 350K before the client upgrade, why not make the WU's about 230K in size. I understand they have a bunch of old WU's that need checked and double checked but what about all the newer WU's? I think this would've been more fair statistic-wise and still would've saved them bandwidth because people are only downloading WU's that are about 66% of of what they were before.

Am I right or is that just stupid?

I don't mind the lower production rates because of the increased work being done. They don't have to make big changes like changing the size of the WU, all they have to do is apply a factor to WU's being produced by 3.03. People would have switched over much faster if they had made every 3.03 WU worth 1.5 WU's for stats purposes.

I think that the process of connecting and handshaking into the database in and of itself consumes some of their resources, so less connections (slower WU due to more science) is a big part of their solution.

A good day

And Welcome to the new members

Robor
Sorry to hea about Rleach's fleet being decommisioned ,does he have anything left?

Ref splitting the WU's up into smaller sizes ,this would increase the load on their splitter (server?) which I believe is already under high load as it is.
I think they were stuck between a rock & a hard place ,& bear in mind that a fews months down the road that we will be use to the longer WU times were getting & everyone will be in the same boat.So your weekly production ranking will be about the same assuming you haven't decommisioned any machines.

Hey guys, Sorry about having to remove most of my clients. I just don't have time anymore to be able to upgrade the client on 50 or so PC's every few months or so. Too many ignorant people who have no idea what the client does complaining about that Jodie Foster software to my boss. I do still have 11 pc's here at work and 3 at home running 3.03. My production will be going from about 100 WU's/day to about 40 WU's/day. If this stupid client upgrade wasn't happening I woulnd't have removed the client on any of them. Yeah, I know it does more science, but it's not worth the time any more for the amount of WU's I will lose.

Thanks HB!

Michael: Good idea on the weighting! I would have thought that what they are changing to would be have dubbed "S@H II: The Next Project."

rleach2: Sorry to hear about your loss! I once put SETI on my brother-in-law's PIII-667 and that made me his Support Staff. When ANYTHING burped he called. It was always my fault.

Go TeAm!!

Okay, rleach 2 had to cut his fleet in about 1/3 but it's time for some good news (not SETI related though). Since he didn't mention it, I will...

Everyone congratulate rleach2 and his family on their new home purchase. He's moving into a newer and larger home soon. The cool thing is it's up in my area of town so when we do guys stuff (get your mind out of the gutter :Q) like play cards, watch football, and drink beer, it's a lot shorter drive. Did I mention it's about 1/2 a mile from a Hooters?

Welcome to the new members !

I've upgraded my old ppc603 server from 2.4 to 3.03. Times are down from 30 hours to 55 hours now... It's good for science... During my RC5 run I still have this server and a PIII 450 crunching SETI WUs at work.
I'll be back with my upgraded home fleet : P200MMX is now C300A, C450 is now C900, Duron 600 is now at 800.

Thanks for the stats HB & FD.
