Overall #9 ranking for Jan in the Club Teams category, but the #?s are all messed up on account of the hacked client. DSL Reports is a ways back but tearing up the charts.

Thanks HB!

Linux seems to be trying to keep us away! Maybe the 10K loss at Matrox will join our TeAm!

I'm going to throw another couple of computers into the fray today With the holiday, demands on the power grid are much lower.

Thanks for the stats HB & FD

[rant mode]My production is going to be seriously hurt for the next few days or more ,I have moved out of my fathers place to a friends house. My PC's now live in the office ,they reckon my PC is too noisey to leave on whilst there & working! ,hence my PIII 820 has been off most of today & will continue to be until I have mananged to quiten it :| ,any suggestions? (BTW I used to sleep with it in the room & on with no probs) [rant over]

BTW it looks like Matrox lost Butcher to IBM (under a different name),he was a very big gun for them ,& I'm assuming he had around 10k WU's

Assim1, How about unpluging case fan(s) and
leaving side case cover off.It may run cool
this way.

Arg! Linux beat us! :| Oh well, there's always tomorrow...

Thanks Hellburner!

Assimilator1: Do you have a noisy case fan, power supply fan, or CPU fan? If so, replace the noisy one. You need your power supply fan and CPU fan but if it's a case fan just unplug it.

Assimilator1, I can help with the noise problem. Which fans are making noise, and if you know the fan models, tell me what they are. I can get some fans for you and ship them to the UK via Global Priority Mail, if you want something but the vendor won't ship it directly to you.

I cooked up a system for my sister that runs so quietly that the HDD motor is literally the only thing audible, once the CD-ROM drive spins down.

Vendors worth a look:

www.phamcomputer.com
www.teamawe.com

Another thing that will help reduce noise level and increase airflow is to remove any metal grillework that the fans must blow through. This reduces turbulence and noise and gives the fan better "breathing room." Wire grilles are a good compromise if you don't trust people to not stick their fingers into the exposed fan. The typical plastic bezel on the front of the case could use some bigger holes drilled in it, too.

edit: furthermore, you can try grounding your noisy fans to the +5V wire in the power supply harness, which is the red one. This will run your fans at 12V - 5V = 7V. You can use a switch to give yourself the option to ground it to 0V or +5V, if you want to. At 7V, my noisy fans become much quieter. And it costs little or nothing.

networkman: You're getting 16.5 hours out of a P2-266? :Q How!? :Q I've got plenty of P2-300's and P2-350's that do a lot worse than that. When they get ahold of a tough WU it takes well over a day to complete.

EDIT: Nevermind... I just caught the key word there... dual

a dual system doesn't average faster per work unit... in fact it should be slower since the FSB and mem bus get saturated. maybe the 266 is so slow that doesn't come into play.

Actually, I forgot to mention that I put in PC100 ram, and have oc'd both cpus to a 75fsb, thus they're at 300 MHz each.

Still.. they're considerably slower than most of my other machines; I can almost get 3 WUs a day on my Athlon 900.. gonna have to consider a 1GHz+ TBird pretty soon, but I'm trying to hold off until the 760MP chipset is released.

Thanks for the suggestions guys

I've found the culprit of a large portion of the noise.
My Globalwin VNS04 HSF original fans are 50x10 ,5000 RPM ,with 10.8 cfm ,I had replaced those with 50x20 ,6500 RPM ,~20 cfm ,these better fans are much noisey than the origianl fans ,I was also getting a resonating problem with them ,so for now I have put the 50x10's back on ,the cpu temp is back up about 3-4C though.

The front case fan(metal grille already removed) & PSU fan is fairly quiet ,so no real probs their.
The rear case fan is a little noisey ,I tried removing the wire grille to make it quiter but it had no noticeable effect.
I don't really want to unplug any case fans as this will push the temps up more ,naturally!.However if they still can't bear it I will unplug the back fan & leave the side cover off.

BTW my case is the Enlight 7237
I will try a few things more before leaving any fans off permanently.
I'm gonna drill out the holes on the front cover (been thinking about doing that anyway (Mechbgone ,do you think that will quieten it down at all?).
I'm going to put some sound insulation on the inside of the removeable side covers.
I will also put some carpet under the case as it currentley sits on a wooden shelf ,which can't be helping!

NWM

I added a dual p2-266 to the TA Seti causeI added a dual p2-266 to the TA Seti cause

Some good news

ElFenix: I didn't mean faster per CPU, I was talking about faster per WU overall. The way I first read it was a P2-266 doing WU's every 16.5 hours, which would be screaming for 3.03. After seeing it's a dualie I read it as it's doing 2 WU's every 33 hours so although it's averaging a WU every 16.5 it's still taking an eternal 33 hours for a single CPU to complete a WU. Hope that makes sense.
