They announce the SavageXP (and AlphaChrome) devices some time ago, I was waiting to see how they faired under the wings of VIA. They have a roadmap to a part called Columbia which (if released soon) could be compeditive on paper.
Tyan and Gigabyte were ready to make cards with the SavageXP chip as a entry-level (read : very low cost) card.
Looks like S3 has delayed Zeotrope core (SavageXP) and respun the silicon. Why? Stability issues. Columbia has been pushed into Q203.
In this high-tech graphics industry it's good to know some things don't change... S3 dissapoints.
