S3TC on a Voodoo5 with new UT Opengl render?

I downloaded the new Direct 3D and Opengl renders at http://unreal.epicgames.com/. DXTC1 was added to Direct 3d so I installed them and the high res textures on the second cd. Direct 3d works like crap it opens the game in a window and looks worse than software mode (- any help to get it to work would be great.) With Opengl the textures nicely detailed (like the screen shots of UT on a GF2 using S3TC in Opengl) unlike glide mode where the textures are flat. Has anyone else tried this?

The new D3D dll works like a charm in my GeForce DDR, looks as good as Loki Open GL but it is dead slow now.

I'd wait a little longer before give it another try.

BTW, a good sign for EPIC support.

i tried the new loki's out on my voodoo5 in d3d. system is a p3-450 not overclocked, 192 mb of ram, voodoo5 clocked at 170.

heres' what I got in: timedemo 1 , demoplay utbench noframecap timebased
d3d 32bit, min frames set to Zero, all option on and on high, software sound on.
a average of three runs:

1024x768 Min 15.8, average 24.9, high 39.7
1280x1024 Min 14.9, average 24.1, high 38.2

so far the textures work good except for the flags are invisable in CTF, so back to glide i go for now for ctf.

I also notice more hardrive trashing, I have my virtual memory set to 256 min and max, i may have to raise the number.

the textures look nice, some maps the improvement is more noticable than others.

I was just wondering because opengl does look noticeably better than glide but runs much slower with minor graphic gliches at 1024x768. How do I get UT to go in to full screen with my V5 in direct 3d? I still can?t figure it out...

Glide is actually going to be updated?! :Q (I wonder by who... Nvidia? or some other company?)
I guess I could wait for that day, kinda like my 100fps in UT in Glide and the stability it has - never liked direct 3d anyways.

ahfung: Whatever the bandwidth being used the textures will take 1/6th the space irrespective of colour depth. I used my Savage3d to play UT for quite some time in 16bit (32bit wasn't fast enough on that card), it looked exceptional using the S3TC files far better than the GeForce even now (maybe not after this new patch), and thats on a poxy 8mb card with 16bit colour.

I'm doing the Glide work.. so anything I want to add basically. I might not legally be able to support "S3TC" but I can come up with some very neat tricks to make FXT1 work just as well and with anything that is based on S3TC.

UPDATE Some of you have emailed me about trouble getting Unreal Tournament to run in Direct3D fullscreen on a Voodoo5 with the beta Direct3D drivers mentioned below (those with DXTC support). A few suggestions :
- enable "Geometry Assist" in your 3dfxTools' Direct3D Advanced Settings (remember to re-boot if you enable this)
- disable "Precaching" in the UnrealTournament.ini file in the relevant [D3DDrv.D3DRenderDevice] section
- make sure "Use3dfx" is set to "False" in UnrealTournament.ini under the same relevant section as above

The above should do the trick. You may want to also try starting up the game in Safe Mode (this option should appear in your Start Menu under the game's folder), choose the option to "Detect 3D Device", then check the "Show All" radio button and choose "Direct3D device", then run the game. I have the settings shown on this page in case you want all the rest of the settings I used. Oh, and perhaps the problem may be that you are using Windows2000 (I'm using Windows98SE). Also, make sure DirectX8 is installed.

So that means since I'm running Windows 2000 there is no way to get it working? Or Is there some type of work around to get UT to run in Direct 3d without Geometry Assist?
