I can get a s939 3400+ and an Asus A8V for $280(after rebate) or a s754 3400+ and a DFI lanparty NF3 for $338. I am wondering which one I should go for. I figure I can overclock more with the DFI and 754, but I could be wrong. What do you reccommend?

(Please don't rant about how I should get PCI-E, I don't have the money as of now. And, socket 939 and 754 doesn't make a difference because I'm not worried about upgrade options.)

Performance is pretty close in this case unless your a serious overclocker I'd go w/ the S939 combo as its cheaper.

939 has better memory management (Dual-DDR is typical)
I have the A8V Asus board..and it screams. I couldn't wait for the nforce4 boards to mature so, maybe I'll wait a bit longer

Don't know if this will help you but...
I have the 3400+ 939 running stable on an asus a8n-sli at 2.6 248*10.5. I bought the Tiger Combo, and sold the board on ebay.

the 939 3400 is an unofficial product, it's a 3500 that can only run at 800MHz HTT. Since it's basically a defective part, I'm a little skeptical of it.

As for a good alternative, why not go for a socket 939 3200+ and a Chaintech VNF4/Ultra mobo? It'll cost around $315 ($195 for CPU, $120 for board) and will be a freakin beast. If you're not scared of overclocking, that CPU and board should be able to take you into the 2.6-2.7GHz range, and you can't beat the feature set. I know everyone thinks NF4 must automatically be too expensive, but there are plenty of NF4 Ultra boards available for prices comparable to nforce3 boards, and they have a better feature set. Chaintech, Foxconn, and ECS all have Ultra boards for $120, and DFI and MSI have more high end boards for $150.

As I post this, according to AI booster I'm at 992MHz HTT. If I drop the multi to 10 I can get it to about 1020, and run Prime95 for a quick 30 min test.
I would agree on the 3200+ can't go wrong there.
