My rule of thumb has typically been +.2v for air cooling, but I'm very conservative compared to some. What is stock on the Opteron? 1.3v, or 1.4v?

Anywho...thanks a bunch for your reply, I'll go ahead and add you to my OP. I've got mine sitting in a box on the floor. My SI-120 never came in today, and I had to work all evening, so I never bothered to take it out of the box. I also got my second GF 6200 PCI-e card as well, so that gives me something else to play with.

You're off to a great start on that bad boy.

We know the good stuff when we see it
Seeing as how I had a pretty subpar overclock (I knew it was going to be bad when I couldn't boot at 2.25ghz at stock volts), I ordered an Opty 146. In a couple days, I'll get to try again

Thanks for going to the trouble of reporting on the chip anyway. It seems like the CAB2E chips are hit-and-miss.

Well, it's odd. Every CAB2E I've seen has done 2.8ghz on air cooling at 1.55v, and I don't think I've seen more than one or two worse than that. Mine at 2.7 @ 1.6v just seems really bottom of the barrel. Hopefully my luck will change with my 146.

I mean, sure, a 2.7ghz Opteron is pretty sweet, no doubt...but I want the magic 3 number
My friend did 3.05 with his CABYE 0540 he got just last week from Tankguys. It was a 146 CABYE 0540FPAW.

I just got my 146 CAB2E FPMW in and I am currently priming at 2700MHz at 1.4v, though ITE SMART reads CPU at 1.36v. I've been having trouble getting Windows to even boot at anything higher, voltage or not. Is it possible I could have hit my ceiling? While I'd love to hit 3.0, I'd settle for 2.8, or FX-57 speed. I'm running a Zalman 7700Cu and memory dividers to keep my RAM close to DDR400 for the time being. I'm running a DFI SLI-DR with the 6.23-3 BIOS as well.

Well, since you're already at 270HTT, I'm assuming your SATA port being used for your drive is locked, so that's fine. Memory dividers, good. Are you lowering your HTT multiplier enough?

Check and see what your board's max HTT is. Drop your chip's multiplier, and try going higher than 270. Also make sure Spread Spectrum is disabled.

If you're priming at 1.4v at 2.7ghz, you DEFINITELY have more room in that chip, so there must be some pesky setting or something else being overlooked. I'm sure you'll get it. Good luck! Fill my little overclocking form out when you get the kink worked out

I am at 3GHz now stable and testing bumped the voltage to 1.39V 273x11, idle temps west from 31-32 to 33-34 loaded 44-45C...killer.

XP90C same as my signature.

Thanks for your help Avalon. My current HTT multi is set to 3. Should I reduce it to 2.5? Also, my DFI board has so many other OC settings I've never heard of that I am really lost as to how to go further. Any DFI SLI-DR owners out there willing to help me out?

Hi -- I just got an update from TankGuys on an order and had to cancel -- thank god they are good about that stuff ... I caught it before it shipped.

In their update they stated they received a shipment of AMD Opteron 146's ... They got 4 CABYE stepping CPUs and 36 CAB2E stepping CPUS.

The one that they were going to ship to me ... based on where I was in their queue would have been a CAB2E 0540 FPMW.

Take care,

- raj

Why did you cancel, rajs? the 146 CAB2E 0540 is a very good stepping. By what I've seen, they're getting better results than the 144 CAB2E's, and are arguably just as good as CABYE 0540 and CABNE 0528/0530.

I got the same email that rajs did, and was also told that I would be getting one of the CAB2E's as well, which disappointed me greatly. I'm going to see what I can do to get a CABYE from there. I may possibly wait if it guarantees me getting such a chip. If there is nothing I can do...well, I don't want to cancel and cause TG to suck up the fees. They're a great outfit. I'll just grin and bear it, and see where my chip lies. I'm really hoping to hit more than 2.7 prime this time.

Raj and Avalon, what day did you guys put in your 146 orders? I ordered a 146 from Excaliberpc.com on the night of 11/13 and got a CAB2E. I just want to know if I made a mistake by not ordering from TankGuys on that day. Right now I am sitting at 2.7GHz at 1.4v. I am really really hoping to get at least 2.8 out of this chip. I think I need to tweak some more, as I can boot and operate Windows (surf, IM, etc) at 3GHz, on 1.4v.

DFI streets opinion of steppings

Single Core Steppings: The list below is a general guide to the strength of steppings from best to worst (as determinded by their probability of reaching 3GHz):

1. CABNE 05xx (excluding 0540)
2. CABYE 0540
3, CABNE 0540 / CABYE 05xx (excluding 0540)
4. CAB2E 05xx
5. CABGE 05xx

It should be known that CAB2E's are more variable than other steppings. They are a bit hit or miss, a fact which diminishes their probability of hitting 3GHz. Many do, but many are stuck below 2.75. This assessment will be reviewed periodically as more info becomes available.

Let's hope this isn't the case for our chips shipping this week
Good luck to everyone receiving theirs.

Anyone know the stepping hierarchy for the dual cores?

Thanks for posting that Solema. I just got my order confirmation from Tankguys and I will be recieving the same stepping as you. If Windows is stable for you @1.4V than I'll bet with some extra volts it'll be Prime stable. Pretty sweet results for a CAB2E.

1.4? That voltage is way too low . 1.55 for single cores.
