Sacrifice performance for cosmetics?

Well I had originally opted to sacrifice performance for cosmetics. I planned on purchasing a 48x CD-RW over a 52x because it was black to match my case. They were both Lite-On so it didn?t really matter to me. Now the black 48x is out of stock so my option is to get the white 52x Lite-On or a black 52x Optorite CD-RW.


What do you guys think? I?ve never heard of Optorite before, are they any good? I have the Antec 1040B and black DVD-ROM plus black floppy. I?m not buying the hardware anywhere else so it?s one or the other.

There are probably only a handful of cdrw mfgs out there still. Most everything out there is a rebadge of Lite On, Aopen, Optorite, etc...

with that said, I have a "Cyber Drive" aka Optorite rebadge 40x12x40x and I've never had a problem, and never made a coaster at 40x. Think I've gone through 100+ cds.

Get the Lite-On and a can of black vinyl dye at any auto parts store! The front bezel is easy to remove, the dye will dry within 1/2 hour, and you've got a great drive in the color to match your case...

The "black" liteon drives are not really black anyway they are a dark gray color. I would sugest you spray it, you will end up with a better match anyway.

My "black" Lite-On CD-R/W is black. Just as black as my case and my black Lite-On DVD ROM drive and my black floppy drive...

Also, as was said before, I think there are really only a few manufacturers and most drives are just rebranded, so you'll probably be safe with the Optorite (never heard of them eihter).

Get a 40x liteon then....plenty fast (though I have a white 48x...the black 40x is really black - my brother has one)


From 48x to 52x you save something like 10 seconds on a burn...

Sounds like you've already bought the case but... There are cases with a door covering the drives so that it really doesn't matter what color they are. I bought this one and it's real nice. (especially with a cold cathode and a custom case badge )

That's the case I have, Antec SX1040B.

It has the door but I still would like to match the drives.

Normally, I'm not much for cosmetics, but beige drives in black boxes look like hell. The performance diff between 52 and 48x isn't much, either, unless you're timing it with a stopwatch.

Vinyl dye is good stuff, btw- penetrates the plastic, doesn't seem to want to scrape off at all...
