Just sold my 5850 because I bought a gtx 470. The 470 was an impulse buy cause it was such a good deal. Faced with the decision I kept the faster card with physix.

Hats off to ATI. Really a super card I'm gonna miss. If you're on the fence about ATI don't be. The 58XX series really are fantastic.

Was this the right decision?

If you want PhysX and don't mind the extra noise/power draw, then yes. Especially if it was a good deal price-wise.

You get it from that Dell deal for 290 bucks? Absolutely made the right decision!

No I got a barely used evga superclocked for $280. Guy used it for 3 weeks and it looks like brand new in the box.

Try it out, see how you like it compared to the 5850... my guess is you just got a side grade that has Physx and is probably louder. < shrug >

I really think Crysis with physx was awesome. If you never played it with physx you never played it. The 470 was high as I wanted to go as far as heat and power consumption. From the test I saw it was about the same as my gtx 280. I thought the 470 was on par with a 5870 with new drivers?

*snip* I haven't heard that anywhere. Are there a set a benchmarks out that compare the two with current drivers that shows a large relative gain for the 470?

Please don't make me have to start cleaning up bait or callouts.

Crysis, physx ? Crysis does not use physx, all the physics are done on cpu. Not surprising that you couldn't tell the difference though. There isn't much of one.

At $280 the 470 is worth getting though, so nice deal, at it's current full retail, not a good buy as it performs the same as a 5850.

You know you could have just picked up a cheap GT 240 for physX and used the beta drivers. But then I guess if your 5850 wasn't a good overclocker then you may notice some improvement.

I thought a recent thread said they were equal after driver updates. I wasn't sure.

Yeah, there was also a recent thread showing the 5850 being equal with the 470 with the new drivers.

How much did you sell your 5850 for, It must have cost you almost nothing to get the 470.
Let us know how you like it, performance heat and noise.

Sold the 5850 for $238. Ended up costing about $50 to upgrade to $470. I won't know till I use it if it's worth the extra $50.

I thought crysis used physx cause in the options there is a 8x+Q and a 16X+Q which doesn't appear with 5850?

I believe that the "Q" settings are nVidia only type of AA. They have nothing to do with PhysX.

Let us know what you think of the card before you listen to anyone here.
I'd like to see what a real consumer thinks about the GTX 470 after being happy with a 5850 for so long. Toyota didn't seem impressed coming from a GTX 260, but he was on a dual core so maybe he wasn't getting the most out of it.
The questions I have are: Does it feel faster? is the noise difference noticable? do you notice anything different in the images?

Yea, it seems like a side grade but the price you got it at was pretty good. Tell us how it performs compared to the 5850 and whether you think the $50 or whatever it is above the the 5850 is worth it.

I sold an e8400 ABIt p35 Pro-XE board + 4 Gbs of 1000Mhz DDR2 and my Arctic Freezer for $260
Bought AMD x6 1055 MSI 890GX and 4Gbs DDR3 1600Mhz for $340

Got 4 more cores that run at same overclock for <$100 win?

It's definitely a side grade, but some of us like to try out what both camps have to offer instead of just relying on secondhand "facts" and benchmarks. This gen I've owned a 5870 and GTX 470, and I don't regret either purchase. Plus, if you sell one of them along the way you usually don't lose too much money in the process.

Radeon 5870... $380
GTX 470... $350
Actually knowing what I'm talking about... priceless

Summer in Texas with a GTX470. Now that's a power bill.

I missed it, is he doing 24/7 folding?

The power crap is over rated. Please tell me what the difference in a power bill would be between a 5850 and a 470 under normal gaming circumstances.

I had 2X280s and didnt notice a difference. Heat? When gaming... absolutely though

My brother's room feels like a furnace sometimes as well when gaming with his 2X4870s.

I dont see the problem with heat anyways since most geeks live in their moms basement anyways.

Nvidia's sure got some good bait...

Not the wisest "upgrade", but at least you didn't pay full price for that 470. Sure hope those drivers improve significantly. :whiste:

You've never played crisis unless you've played it with physx? What exactly are you seeing OP? I'm pretty sure crytek used a proprietary physics engine for the game and has zero physx support...?
