Now it may not be the saddest song but this is very subjective anyways.
With that said, I would say The Wreck of The Edmund Fitzgerald. Based on a true story. Gordon Lightfoot's version is ok but this version is kickass. Gives me goosebumps following along the lyrics.
We joke about bad weather at sea and when the skies darken and the wind comes up make the comment "bring it on, bitch!". Well all that is meaningless when listening to this song. Jokes aside, you don't mess with Mother Nature!
For those too young to recall look it up!
p.s. This definitely needs mention in the original vs. cover thread.

who does that version? I'm not liking it as much as Gordon Lightfoot's rendition. Not fond of the way this vocalist intonates.

That is a happy song (Over the Rainbow).
Alice in Chains - Nutshell is probably the saddest song I've ever heard.

definitely Johnny Cash - Hurt. especially when watching the music video and seeing the pictures of June Carter Cash.
runner up: Sinead O'Conner - Nothing Compares 2 U. politics aside, I think it's a really sad song.
Kiss Me by Six Pence None the Richer also makes me increadibly depressed. it's an awful song in and of itself, but there are also horrible memories assosiated with it. it was the song playing on the radio when I caught my then-SO cheating on me. that happened in, like, June, and then that song got 24/7 radio play for the rest of the summer. I was a mess
edit: "Can't Make You Love Me" by Bonnie Rait also gets an honorable mention.
