Oh and "Mike and the Mechanics" - In the living years

Oh and for RELIGIOUS songs that bring a tear:

"Kirk Franklin" w/Choir - My life is in your hands

Damn one more I forgot.

"Mariah Carry" - Hero

Oh yeah - good one! "The Living Years" is really sad. I mean horribly sad. I was young and my Dad was on a business trip (involving a plane trip - as safe as they are) and the video came on. Even though my Dad I didn't get along very well it was insanely saddening - in fact not getting along with my Dad very well is what made it so much worse and the song is exactly about that.

Yeah I know what you mean. But my dad's just a 'tard. I WISH I had a loving relationship with my dad but he does not know how to love, by his own admission. BTW I'm 32 he's 55

Wow. I'm 16 and my dad is either 55 already or will be 55 next year. Damn you people with parents who are close to your age!

Hmm...what about Two Beds and a Coffee Machine by Savage Garden?

That's really sad, definitely. How about The Ataris - The Saddest Song? Haha, it's just called that; it's not really that sad.

Simple Plan - Perfect

Some of The Ataris songs are pretty sad though, at least to me because of the memories they bring back. Like Fast Times At Dropout High.

Call Me Call me from the Cowboy Bebop soundtrack.

Only sad if you've seen the episode it goes with.

And yes, it's in English for all the haters out there.

I don't think the not being in English is the part people hate on.

I absolutely hate all things anime but Space Lion from Cowboy Bebop is pretty good I'll admit.

The SeatBelts are freakin' awesome...

Adagio for Strings by Barber is very, very depressing...

Saturn, by Gustav Holst has the most perfect dissonant ending I've ever encountered in music...and I've been studying it for 16 years now.

HOWEVER...most depressing song EVER has to go to...

Mozart: Requiem. If you know the story behind it, it just hits you like a ton of bricks.

Damn, not many rock fans here...

I submit "Angel's Son" performed by Lajon from Sevendust... I had a close friend die at the same time this song came out so it really made a connection for me and I still get teary when I hear it.

Alice in Chains - Nutshell is probably the saddest song I've ever heard.

That's the first song I thought of when I first read the title of the post. Weird thing is I can't relate to the song at all.

I have seen alot of good postings for "saddest song" here, but for me, the saddest songs I know are the ones I can relate to depressing or sad events in my life. Being a former lead vocalist, I always used all of that emotion to draw upon while performing....it's a powerful thing, making the crowd feel what you feel...and that's what it's all about. If these songs reach you on that level, they've definately done their job.

P.S. I listened to the cover of "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald"...there's something to be said for the music...wasn't fond of the vocals at all...

EDIT: Here's an addition to the list... Jane Sibbery - It Can't Rain all the Time - From The Crow Soundtrack

Some good songs on here, those that didn't draw from contempory radio shlock.

Here's my quick list:

1. Adaigo for Strings - Samuel Barber (think this is our winner)
2. Jeff Buckley (covering Leonard Cohen) - Hallelujah
3. Jeff Buckley (covering Nina Simone) - Lilac Wine
4. Iron & Wine - The Trapeze Swinger (beautiful, sad song, 9+ mins)
5. Sigur Ros - several songs, hard to pick one, but Staraflur was the first I ever heard
6. Nick Drake - Pink Moon
7. Big Star - Thirteen (One of the most perfect songs ever written)
8. Elliott Smith - King's Crossing
9. Elliott Smith - I Didn't Understand or Pitseleh (tie)
10. Last Kiss (the Pearl Jam version was the first I thought of)

I'd have put some Beatles/Harrison/Lennon stuff on here but even their sad songs make me smile.

SRV - Life without you
SRV - Life By The Drop
SRV - Lenny

And of a bunch of the cure (Its prob not fair to use goth rock for sad songs)
The entire Faith Album is very sad
Disintegration - Pictures of you
Disintegration - Homesick
Wish - A letter to Elise
Wish - To wish impossible things
Wish - Trust
Wild Mood Swings - Treasure
Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me - Just like heaven

I could list a million songs from bluesmen, but sad songs in the blues arn't sad. They are for getting happy.

Billie Holiday - Strange Fruit

Southern trees bear strange fruit,
Blood on the leaves and blood at the root,
Black bodies swinging in the southern breeze,
Strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees.

Pastoral scene of the gallant south,
The bulging eyes and the twisted mouth,
Scent of magnolias, sweet and fresh,
Then the sudden smell of burning flesh.

Here is fruit for the crows to pluck,
For the rain to gather, for the wind to suck,
For the sun to rot, for the trees to drop,
Here is a strange and bitter crop.

My son turned ten just the other day
He said, "Thanks for the ball, Dad, come on let's play
Can you teach me to throw", I said "Not today
I got a lot to do", he said, "That's ok"
And he walked away but his smile never dimmed
And said, "I'm gonna be like him, yeah
You know I'm gonna be like him"

specially for those of us that grew up without fathers
