that song is generally reserved for memorial purposes these days. It's very emotive, and the state of "sad" has a very wide range.

lyrics along don't make something sad and further, when the same words are used with a different tune, and set against a particular reference, it can be extremely sad.

I have seen it used with newborns and for people that have died.

What a thing is attached to != the thing.
The song has spiritual connotations which can be used to intensify grief. That does not make the song itself sad. There's nothing about the song that's sad.
You should watch the video, so you can notice that the cheering at the end is not out of place. The absence of an emotional contradiction there proves that it ain't a sad song.

So congratulations, in a thread for "saddest song" you epically failed by trying to /thread with a song that isn't even sad.

However, no one is going to come in here and say "What a Wonderful World" is a sad song, /thread.

Only problem I have with that is it's so overused as quote, unquote, "sad" piece of music that it's almost comical when posted in lits of "sad" songs. I'm also shocked it took so long to come up.
