Very sad, hard to tell whether or not it is justified. Articles can be written the way they want to capture a certain angle.

It's tragic and sad and I don't know what to think of it, though I'm leaning torward the cop being unjustified.

However, Golden Retrievers running toward you is scary as shit. These are not small dogs.

No, it's not scary at all if you know anything about dogs. He might knock your legs out trying to get closer to you - THE HORROR.

WTF!!

Edit: Genx87, reading comprehension? "The family had an electric fence, but there was not a sign alerting the officer it was there, Daniel said."

So there is an electric fence that had no sign letting the officer know. What does reading comprehension have to do with this?

I said this is tragic but people need to take care of their animals as well. Put a sign up if there is an electric fence. Or put it on a leash.

1) a golden retriever is BIG dog
2) no fence, no leash - no restraint
3) dog is running a him barking.

what is he supposed to do, wait until it's chewing off his face before doing something?

yeah, he could have use pepper spray or something like that but what if it didn't work. when you fear for your safety you use the most effective tool to save it.

Agreed. The family failed by not putting out any signs of an electric fence. Plus the fact that those aren't 100% full proof. I love animals but if I have to chose between possibly being mauled or shooting a dog, I will shoot the dog. Now if I have a taser (don't know if this cop had one or if all cops carry em) I might consider trying to zap the dog.

If that guy's running towards me, it's going down.

And there's the whole thing with invisible fencing being absolutely useless at stopping a dog who really wants to cross it.

Cop had no idea there was an electric fence. Don't most people have a sign, or little orange flags out stating such? Apparently this family did not.

Would like to hear what the cop has to say for himself.

uh, no. Those flags don't stay long and are only meant to train the dog. Who puts up signs?

No physical fence, no care. If some dog you didn't know was barking and running towards you would you hope that it doesn't hurt your or would you try and stop it from hurting you?

Human instinct will tell you to protect yourself.

LOL @ 'golden retrivers arent scary'

all 100lb dogs running at your are 'scary' on some level.

its very sad, but i agree, sadistic not found

I've been bite by a few dogs and it was always 'the first time they've bitten someone'

my coworker had one and it did ZERO to keep his husky from running away constantly

I don't know anyone that has any flags or other indicators in my area. Maybe it depends by region. I can understand that the cop can't just sit around and wait, but I mean think for a second before you kill a family pet inside someone's own yard. I can only imagine how traumatic that would be for the family. If it can't be helped, so be it, but shooting should not be the first resort, especially not with a golden since they are very unlikely to be dangerous.

It's easy to say that from the comfort of a couch, I know, but still. Having and using a deadly weapon requires using some good judgment.

If you stop and think, you just allowed yourself to get attacked. I know I'm not the fastest guy around, but a dog is pretty damn fast and if you give a dog a second, it can close a sizeable distance.

Stop and think about reality before knee-jerk emotional responses.

Unless you are willing to take a chance at being bitten, the only weapon to use in these situations is a gun. Anything less will not absolutely stop an attacking dog. The officer did what he was trained to do since rule #1 is to make it home safely to your family at the end of each day.

That said, I might have gone to my pepper spray first since it was a golden retriever and not a pit or rottie, had I had sufficient time to react. It's hard to say without being there.

I think the "sadistic" title on the thread is a bit unwarranted though.

Uh, yes. Actually, my neighbor has a sign up. It's an advertisement for the pet fence company, but it also tells you the yard has the electronic fence.

I think if postal workers and meter readers can deal with dogs every day without a gun, this officer could have too. Sure a 100lb dog running at you can be scary, but I've had labs and golden retrievers run at me barking only to stop when they got to me and want to play. I've only had to pepper spray a dog once...and it was a freakin beagle. Probably didn't help that I went against all my training and tried to run.

I was thinking much the same, but cops are trained that deadly force is justified anytime there is a chance they may get hurt. Unless law enforcement culture is changed they will always go to the gun as their primary weapon.

I fully understand shooting a pit or rottie, since they are often trained as attack dogs, and especially during an arrest if they are trying to defend their owner. I'm not sure a barking golden retriever in someones front yard automatically rises to the same level of threat.

yeah, at least the cop wasnt injured or worse yet, licked in the face, right??
Yeah, at least the dog wasn't anal raped, castrated, set on fire, skinned or worse yet, forced into ordinary house cat sex. Sarcasm for free.

Like I said, sad and tragic.

cop is not sadistic. dogs are animals like others, when an seemingly unrestrained one show you aggressiveness you got to be ready to defend yourself. i've heard great danes eaten baby alive, im pretty sure that golden retriever could bite.

Uh, they had an electric fence. I have an electric fence around my yard as well, my dog doesn't have to be on a leash as long as it's in MY YARD. I have no problem with an officer defending him/herself if 1) the dog got outside the fence and was menacing, or 2) the officer had to come into my yard for official duty (like chasing a bad guy) and had to defend themselves.

Killing a dog for simply barking inside the yard of the owner seems absurd.

Agree 100%
