What the hell is it with dog people?!?!?
Look I love animals but give me a break. A random giant dog with no leash (invisible fence does not count) is running at the guy and you expect him to not shoot it?
My neighbors had a German Shepard that always seemed like a safe family friendly dog; I would hang out over there all the time. One day my mom came to pick me up the dog ran out the front door straight towards her and bit her in the arm and leg for no reason.
Don't expect everyone to trust and worship animals like you might.
It was just a DOG, not like the guy shot their kids or anything.
German Shephards are often used for police work. In large part, they are an excellent tracking breed, and have no problem bringing a suspect down. They are not your typical safe family friendly dog unless they are trained that way. They are often guard dogs. That said, if you see one of those running at you, their bark is much more "scary" than a playful Golden Retriever.
And if you're a cop, any cop, I'd suspect you have to know a little something about dogs as you are likely to encounter them on a recurring basis when entering a suspect's dwelling, investigating a scene, or whatever. Dogs are everywhere that police end up.
I'm sorry, but a dog in someone's yard is not an immediate threat, even if it is running at you. Have you ever seen a dog play fetch? They run at you. They jump on you. They lick your face. They're playful, inquisitive beasts. Very seldom do you see dogs that actually bite people out in the open, unrestrained in a front yard. It happens, sure. But killing a dog because it runs at you? I don't know what kind of weiners they have on the force, but Labs/Golden Retrievers are big, dumb dogs. They want nothing more than affection, attention, and to play fetch. If a cop doesn't know that, they shouldn't be a cop.
For fuck's sake... how many families own a lab or retriever as the family dog? My brother has two labs, my dad has two labs, my aunt has one lab, my wife's friend has a lab, an old buddy of mine has a Golden Retriever, my boss has a lab, and old co-worker has a Golden Retriever, and on, and on, and on. They're probably the two most common breeds for bigger house dogs. Everything in the fucking pound is a lab mixed something or other. Is it really a stretch to think the officer knows what a Golden Retriever is?
