The officer ordered the dog to stop and when it didn't, the officer shot and killed the animal in its yard

Seriously? What a fucking moron. How goddamn stupid do you have to be to think that dog is actually going to attack you?

There's a huge difference between a dog barking just to bark at shit and a dog looking to attack something. If my dog bit everything she barked at then every car, person, bird, tree, family member, and breeze to come within a hundred yards of our house would be covered in teeth marks. But they aren't.

Sadistic is what Michael Vick did. This isn't sadistic or extremely violent.

What happened to that guy anyway? In response to a youtube video about the story of Michael Vick being a confirmed dog murderer, I suggested Michael Vick be dragged behind a car until he is dead and some retard said that was racist. Justice = racist. Forget this cop story, we need to get on Michael Vick's ass for being a murdering piece of shit.

I think if postal workers and meter readers can deal with dogs every day without a gun, this officer could have too. Sure a 100lb dog running at you can be scary, but I've had labs and golden retrievers run at me barking only to stop when they got to me and want to play. I've only had to pepper spray a dog once...and it was a freakin beagle. Probably didn't help that I went against all my training and tried to run.

This. Seriously.

While I don't agree with the OP's tact, I certainly don't agree with the cop's actions. It's a family pet. You're walking by, and you shoot it because it runs up to you barking?

1) It's a Golden Retriever, they bark and yip and make all kinds of noise.

2) It's a dog. It's curious about this strangely dressed man walking by the house. It's going to run up and take a look.

So how is it that this menacing beast hadn't been reported by the postal worker, or the UPS guy, or the Fedex guy, or anyone else as a threat? But yet, when this civil servant walks by... his safety is in danger? I don't buy it. Use your head before you use your gun... simple concept really.

And this topic, IMO, is totally different than the officer dealing with the jack-ass that was pointing a black hose-nozzel at him. Man with what appears to be a gun aimed at you... or a Golden Retriever... one is a threat, one is not.

I've been knocking on doors, collecting, for 24 years. Lots of dogs/barkers and only a couple that I pepper spayed.

There was one dog that bit a competitors asst. manager. Tore a hole in his scrotum, with the owner standing there.

My brother in law had his black lab shot by an off duty officer in a park in Chicago. He was playing frisbee with his dog and the off duty officer was jogging by and the dog decided go run after him. The officer pulled out his concealed carry turned around and shot his dog right in the face. The bullet went through the dogs nose, tongue and bottom of his mouth. To make a long story short, the dog lived, the cop never appologized nor helped/offered with the $1000+ pet bills.

you have problems with logic, reality, common sense, perhaps several other things....don't you?
Maybe he can't tell the difference between forcing people to fight to death in a cage vs shooting someone.

According to WWF wrestlemania, fighting in the cage is way less violent

What the hell is it with dog people?!?!?

Look I love animals but give me a break. A random giant dog with no leash (invisible fence does not count) is running at the guy and you expect him to not shoot it?

My neighbors had a German Shepard that always seemed like a safe family friendly dog; I would hang out over there all the time. One day my mom came to pick me up the dog ran out the front door straight towards her and bit her in the arm and leg for no reason.

Don't expect everyone to trust and worship animals like you might.

It was just a DOG, not like the guy shot their kids or anything.

I vote cop gets fired, but maybe its just me.
I've been attacked by dogs that look golden retrievers seem small and never felt threatened enough to just kill it...

.

yes i do expect that. NOT everyone likes or knows the breed. i have owned a few golden retrievers (my favorite dog to own) and it wouldnt have bothered me at all. because i know that it would have stopped a few feet from me and it just wanted to get petted or played with.

but for someone that does not know how they are a big dog (yes they are big) charging you barking is a scary site and i understand the reaction.

As a dog lover if you live in a area with a lot of people you need to keep it on a leash or in a fenced in yard.

the cop made a mistake. but one not as bad as everyone here is claiming.

Yet incidents like this continue to happen. Perhaps these departments should invest a bit of time in providing some training to officers on how to deal with dogs they may encounter in their daily duties other than drawing and firing their weapon as their only first response. There is a world of difference between a golden retriever coming off a porch in a otherwise non descript neighborhood and a pit bull charging in some drug infested ghetto and cops should be able to measure their response based on the situation at hand.

German Shephards are often used for police work. In large part, they are an excellent tracking breed, and have no problem bringing a suspect down. They are not your typical safe family friendly dog unless they are trained that way. They are often guard dogs. That said, if you see one of those running at you, their bark is much more "scary" than a playful Golden Retriever.

And if you're a cop, any cop, I'd suspect you have to know a little something about dogs as you are likely to encounter them on a recurring basis when entering a suspect's dwelling, investigating a scene, or whatever. Dogs are everywhere that police end up.

I'm sorry, but a dog in someone's yard is not an immediate threat, even if it is running at you. Have you ever seen a dog play fetch? They run at you. They jump on you. They lick your face. They're playful, inquisitive beasts. Very seldom do you see dogs that actually bite people out in the open, unrestrained in a front yard. It happens, sure. But killing a dog because it runs at you? I don't know what kind of weiners they have on the force, but Labs/Golden Retrievers are big, dumb dogs. They want nothing more than affection, attention, and to play fetch. If a cop doesn't know that, they shouldn't be a cop.

For fuck's sake... how many families own a lab or retriever as the family dog? My brother has two labs, my dad has two labs, my aunt has one lab, my wife's friend has a lab, an old buddy of mine has a Golden Retriever, my boss has a lab, and old co-worker has a Golden Retriever, and on, and on, and on. They're probably the two most common breeds for bigger house dogs. Everything in the fucking pound is a lab mixed something or other. Is it really a stretch to think the officer knows what a Golden Retriever is?

I know more good dogs than I know good kids.

lol so true. When dogs do bad shit you hit em in the face with a newspaper. When kids do bad things, you sue the school because they tried to swat your kid in the face with a newspaper.

'good dogs' bite people too.....but I agree some more caution should be used

some users here seem to think the dog was in its yard barking

when in fact it was running at the cop

um my local pd last 2 drug dogs were labs and they can do a takedown just fine!

I should get some video of my 40lb lab/terrier mix taking down my neighbors 80lb shepard when they play in the back yard....

Very sad.

Couldn't he just pepper spray it or taze it if he felt threatened? Can't they do that to dogs?

They could, this happens a lot. Many see it as officer 'justice delivery'. Unfortuately most laws side with the officer allowing to do just this "if he fears for his safety".

Doesn't have to be a bite worry, just the fact that the dog may impede the officer's investigation/stop/etc.

Very subjective rules.
