*realizes that his new esata mod will not help his little mac mini from the abuse that safari will bring*

spiffy iddeed

It looks like this mirrors a very extension-heavy firefox configuration. Ncie to know these defautls will be out there.

Webclip function seems to be gone .

Update: false alarm, have to customize toolbar to get the webclip button back.

Its resemblance to GOOG chrome is striking, lol.

I reckon I'll take it out for a shakedown, looks promising.

Mail.app users, is Safari 4 borking Mail for you? That's what I saw over at TUAW earlier. I'm at work so I can't try it out yet.

Nope, mail is working fine here.

Anyone know if you can make the Top Sites show as your homepage?

Yes, you can. Open up topsites, go to prefs, then tell it to user your current page as home page. Should be something like "topsites:///"

Set your homepage in the preferences to

topsites:///

(I figured this out by having the topsites displayed, then going into preferences and clicking "use current page")

I like it so far, really like the look of the topsites, which I realize Chrome has, but there is no Chrome on OS X, and the Top Sites in Safari 4 are being pulled from months of aggregate history from Safari 3... so it is much more accurate (and less embarrassing for someone to see).

Here are my likes;
The new tab bar on top, don't necessarily like it, but I do like how the current tab label is wider than the inactive ones
Google searches from the search bar are better and very Inquisitor like. However, I really loved the shortcuts that I could give Inquisitor, so I will probably see if it will work with Safari 4.

Dislikes:
Why o Why did they have to remove the inline page loading indicator? That was the best thing ever!

edit: By changing 2 values in the .plist value I was able to get back the inline page loading indicator.

defaults write com.apple.Safari DebugSafari4IncludeToolbarRedesign -bool NO
defaults write com.apple.Safari DebugSafari4LoadProgressStyle -bool NO

So far I'm using it on windows at work and I'm enjoying it. If it had firebug, adblock, and stumble upon it would replace firefox for me on both windows and mac.

What is firebug?
Adblock can be granted with Safari-Adblock, which works great in OS X.
Not sure about stumbleupon

Just installed it on my Windows 7 64 box, the topsites seems like a great idea, of course I don't have any of my own yet as I haven't browsed enough for it to figure out which I like. I don't block ad's lack of an Ad-Blocked plugin means nothing to me. Seems to run pretty well. I might stick with it for Topsites alone. All that's missing is mouse gestures. I don't use them much in FF but I do like them. Any ways to add these to Safari 4? Google is saying there are some cocoa extensions but I'm on a PC not Mac

I can't for the life of me get the HTTPS Gmail to load on Safari 4. It opens no problem in firefox. HTTP loads fine in both.

Very weird.

I just went to <a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="https://www.gmail.com"><a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="https://www.gmail.com"><a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="https://www.gmail.com">https://www.gmail.com</a></a></a> and it worked fine. Maybe because I had previously logged in through regular gmail.com?

EDIT: Goodness Safari4 is fast, clicking on thread titles in AT causes an instant load. As fast as I can blink, maybe faster. Nice. If this is any indication of Snow Leopard, then I'll start waiting in line for it now.

https gmail works for me too, and the speed is very nice. I think I used the old version of Safari maybe 2 times, this might become my new browser, been using it most of the afternoon and it's solid.

I have 10.5.6 on both my MacBook and my Hack, and it runs great in both. I did have to run the security update on my Hack (I just hadn't gotten around to it just yet) so that was 2 restarts there, but otherwise, painless and simple.

Oh, and gmail https works just fine here on my Hack. Haven't tested it yet on my MacBook, but then again, I do not use webmail on my MacBook generally.

I just installed Safari 4 and it's awesome! I love the topsites page and set it as my home. And unlike the people at TUAW, it didn't cause Mail.app to fail. This is cool.
