my sys temp is currently 44 and my CPU is 48, i'm thinking about toning down the cooling on my system to lower the noise. how high can the cpu temp be w/o being harmful? 60, maybe 70? (temps are in deg. celsius)

Intel or AMD ?

Intel says the P4's can go up to 70 deg. AMD says the Athlon XP's are safe up to about 90 deg.

ok crap, i just checked my computer and it seems as if 80% of the noise is coming from my video card fan. any possibility that i could get away w/ running a ti4600 w/o a fan (no zalman mods - this card is in a small form factor PC.)

My first, second and only opinion is that the temp of the components does not matter until said temps start affecting performance. If the computer runs stable at 65C, then it doesn't really matter. By the time even those temps destroy your hardware, it will long since have passed into obsolesence. Bottom line for me: stability matters, not the number of degrees C my CPU runs at.

Thanks to the kind folks at this forum I downloaded AIDA32 and discovered that my AMD64 is not running as hot as I had feared. It runs pretty much at 31C and the MBoard reports 42C. Why the MBo is so much hotter is a mystery to me. But I am here to say that AIDA32 is a great program.

Id say 65*C is the danger point and keeping it below 60 is a good idea. DONT go up in the 80's and 90's you could fry eggs on top of ur pc then, which isnt a good plan.
