I haven't seen this posted yet, so I thought I'd get it on here. I was checking out AMD's new website and noticed that they are selling their "processor in a box" directly now.

They don't have the lowest prices but they are pretty good considering you get retail. That saves you the price of a heatsink/fan, gives you a longer warrantee and let you know you won't have to worry about some sleazy e-retailer trying to remark the chip. I know I always buy my ram from Crucial for the security of knowing what I'm getting. It may cost a little more but it's worth it. Anyway here's the link:

okay, this has a direct link from amd, but it is NOT direct from AMD, it goes through avvnet , similar to other manufacturers listing their "recommended" retailers

They are obviously using this other site to do their transaction handling. I have no affiliation with avnet and thus nothing to gain.

The more... link goes to the avnet website, and no I don't work for avnet. I've never heard of them before.

It's not a scam... I followed it in from www.amd.com -> product information -> computing solutions -> PC Buyers guide -> processors in a box. (where avnet is AMD's official ecommerce partner)

Avnet is a distributor just like Tech Data and Ingram Micro. It looks like AMD has just outsourced their consumer internet commerce to Avnet. Hey most of the internet based retailers just drop ship from one of the distributors, so this really isn't much different. Though there isn't a lot of choice to pick from on the web site.

How good are the stock heatsink/fan? Anybody ever see a cooling review that compared them to aftermarkedt stuff? Is the retail heatsink "glued" on permanently?

Not that good. You won't be able to do much overclocking with it.

No. I believe they use thermal tape instead of thermal grease/compound. It's rather hard to get the tape off the processor if any gets on, but it works.

Its bizarre because its so obscure. I couldn't find it very easily when I went through their homepage. I'd assume these guys are better to go through than most etailors but I'm not sure that it guarantees top notch customer service.

It seems to me that you are paying a "premium" for being able to order the boxed cpu "direct" from AMD and/or their chosen supplier.

If you purchase a boxed CPU from say Newegg........the warranty is the same.

Save some money methinks and buy it from another source than AMD and/or their chosen supplier.

I work for a major electronics manufacturer and we buy parts by the millions. Avnet is one of the suppliers we work with, along with others such as Arrow, so this is a legitimate outfit. Not sure how well they work for consumers but they have been carrying the AMD line for a while. If you go to avnet's website, you will see that they carry Intel processors along with AMD's so I am not sure how earth shattering this is.

I've bought quite a few Retail boxed AMD processors for computers that I build for other people (since they dont overclock). The heatsink/fan is good if you dont plan on overclocking and probably isn't half bad if you dont plan on doing a major overclock. The AMD Retail boxed processors that I have used all used Thermal compound to transfer heat from the processor to the heatsink ... No thermal tape. It is a normal heatsink/fan that connects using the "hooks" on the motherboard's socket... Pain in the butt to connect, but once its on it works great. Pretty decent processor temperatures for a 1.4Ghz Athlon I think ... (Around 80 degrees F).

I just got a couple of 1.2 ghz retail athlons from Augustus Technologies . . .

The retail processors I got do not use thermal tape, they just have a blotch of semi-hard thermal paste pre-applied to the heatsink. You can get the paste off in seconds with finger nail polish remover if you would rather use Artic Silver (or you favorite concoction).
