Hi all,

Is it safe to run an Athlon XP 2000 in the 70-75C range? Or would you risk damage at that temp?

Thanks!

I think the XP chips have a maximum operating load of around 80C, so 70-75C is pushing it IMO. Personally, I wouldn't worry if the full load temp is 60C or less....anything more than that and I start looking at improving cooling.

mine is 48 at full load better check it out. sometimes the motherboard is the culprit. if you keep it that way, it'll go out on you pretty soon.

If it is stable I wouldn't pay the temp any mind. Who knows how far off it is either way from actual. The operational temp is 85-90c so I'd run P95TT for a few hrs minimum and see if it errors out or not. Even if it does eventually cook it, it is worth maybe $30 anyhow, and you'd pay that for a good cooler

Hi all,

Thanks for the responses! Has an XP2000 ever been known to burn out in the 70-75C range? When you say it's a bad temp is it a "well it's not exactly a very cool temp" kind of bad or "You're seriously risking it burning up" kind of bad?

Just wondering how far I can push it...

Are you adding voltage which is causing those temps?

If you are, thats probably way too much. Chips shouldn't run that hot.

CPU/Processors AND overclocking. Not "Overclocked CPU/Processors."

Anyway... open up the computer and clean out dust if you haven't already. If you're using some sort of thermal compound (rather than the wax pad on a retail heatsink) between the heatsink and CPU, consider taking the heatsink off and reapplying it.

If none of that helps then the heatsink just can't hack it. Either lower the overclock or get a new heatsink/fan.

My friend is using an AMD XP 2100+ chip with a Abit KD-7 motherboard. We recently installed a new heatsink (SI-97) and his temps are 70C CPU and 60C case while running prime95. This seems abnormal, would anyone know what may be causing this? His computer is not t-bred so it is not overclocked.
