Safe to use isopropyl on heatsink?

I clean my hsf and cpu in 3 steps:

1. I use brake cleaner to get the bulk of the goop off.

2. I then use isopropyl alcohol to clean off any residue from the goop and the brake cleaner.

3. Finally, I hose the chip and hsf down with canned air to get dust off just before applying new goop.


This process works like a charm for me.

I use rubbing alcohol (not sure what %) to clean off my CPUs and heatsinks, and it works fine.

i had a friend try to argue alcohol can eat through plastic. he said he saw a shot of everclear dissolve one of those wax paper cups. i asked him why they store alcohol in plastic containers. he said he don't know but it can eat through plastic.

IPA does not attack plastics ,at least the ones I've come across.

The army stores it in Plastic containers! (AL11)

My reading tells me that Isopropyl is water loving. So, if you have a sealed container of 99 % Isopropyl, and open it to atomphere, it will start to absorb atmosheric moisture and change its content of water.

I used paint thinner on my cpu and gpu, guess I am lucky that all is still working.

I took the thinner off with isopropanol. Used the thinner because there was a thin layer of something the alcohol would not lift.
