Safeguarding the Family PC

I am looking for a software that will work in the background and filter content from young eyes using the internet. I tried the options in Windows but it is so intrusive that it blocks anytime someone wants to use google or their favorite sites. I am not trying to stop internet use but adult content.

What do you recommend that can block certain content in stealth mode? Any good free ones out there?

If the Vista Parental Controls isn't to your liking, you could try OpenDNS.com (free) and have them (attempt to) filter it at the DNS server for you. But if one failure is one too many, then it's not going to be enough.

Thanks for the reply. This PC is running XP. As I said in my previous post I found the XP controls way too intrusive. It kept asking for the password even when one is trying to access a Favorite or using a search engine.

Thanks, Alienwho. There are so many out there I don't know what is legit and what is not. I looked at this before but I didn't have any user reviews to fall back on.

I have used it, and I am familiar with the company (Blue Coat). They are very legit, and an industry leader in hardware filtering. Many companies buy their hardware solutions which cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. This is their free software-based consumer PC version. It's easy to check off specifically what you want to filter. They update their filtering list often.

If I had kids using a computer, this is what I would use.

I'm an infosec guy and I've used both the vista parental controls and also ran a VM linux proxy running squid/dansguardian

For ease of use go with the vista parental controls. I've seen open dns but never tried. I also agree bluecoat is a good one in the corp world
