I'd rather just be in the blast zone, that way I didn't have to deal with a post-apocalyptic wasteland.

But for what it's worth, no, florida wouldn't be safe. Most of the south, in fact, has an inordinate number of military bases. CONUS would likely only be safe in the mountains somewhere, away from both civilization and military bases (hard). Good idea to be upwind from important nuke sites, so at the north end of the great plains wouldn't be terrible.

But yeah it won't really matter.

By ww3 are we discussing a full nuclear exchange? With thousands of warheads?

LOL, no where in the US is safe. Alaska, due to the distance, is probably the safest. but it's too close to Russia! But to think they wouldn't send a nuke to Disney World is stupid.

No one is safe if WW3 stars. Probably your best bet is holed up in a mountain somewhere in the middle of nowherel

Jericho, Kansas in Fillmore County.

Although you still have to worry about EMP's, apparently.

if nukes are involved, i rather die instantly in the blast zone than die slowly from the fall out n what not

Umm, hate to break it to you but yall have an ICBM site so Wyoming is ground zero for a first (or retaliatory) nuclear strike.

yes, in Cheyenne, there are several icbm sites. I would be in the southwest part of the state. plenty of water down there in fontanel and flaming gorge reservoirs, plenty of cows, sheep, antelope to eat. Horses to catch and use and abandoned homesteads to live in. If it gets very bad, there are the trona mines and old coal mines to take shelter, also coal in surface outcropings for heat and I know enough about the oil wells to use them, lots of condensate you can put right into a gas tank in a pinch. also, a good area for the zombie apocalypse. I also have the necessary training to deal with non-trivial radiation.

never put any thought into it though.....

If that sort of conflict starts, no one and nowhere will be safe. You should, in fact, hope to be directly in the blast zone of any nuclear ordnance, such that your nervous system is vaporized before it can feel pain, because believe you me the survivors will envy the dead if it comes to that.

If World War 3 starts with Russia, there is a good chance that all major US cities would get nuked. Florida is most definitely not safe!

They would nuke all of our known missile silo locations as well, so there goes the plan for hiding out in Montana or Wyoming.

I'd imagine that Northern Alaska would be safe, assuming that you wouldn't freeze or starve to death once nuclear winter kicks in.

They never really explained the whole EMP thing in that show, did they?

Jericho doesn't exactly exist, but there are probably other places in Kansas that might be OK depending on where the fallout ends up.

That's a 10MT yield, ground detonation on McConnel AFB (refueling wing), obviously, the windsock depends on where the wind is blowing. Radiation-wise, if you're in that band up to Lawrence, you've got about an hour to get out before you are starting to look at severe illness/death. This is of course assuming there's somewhere to escape to.

I'm probably close enough to the US to get nuclear fallout. If things go nuclear, probably move up north. If shit really hits the fan, I'm going to Nunavut.

The midwest is tricky. People assume it would be safe from attack since people don't realize the strategic location there.

An attack to Omaha, Nebraska would devastate our transportation, energy, and do a good dent to our military. Omaha, not to much further north from your map has:
* An air force base, part of the air force global strike command,
* Is the central hub/control for most trucking and railroad companies,
* Transportation wise has the intersection of two major interstates used for transporting goods around the country (one of the only 4 east-west routes), the Missouri river for barge traffic, and one of the only two east-west high speed rail lines for goods.
* Has most major oil pipelines running near it.
* The remaining ICBM Missile storage isn't that far from it.

We wouldn't be able to move supplies around the country very well if Omaha was attacked. We wouldn't have the oil available to transport around it either. The only good thing about the Omaha area in WW3 is that it is far from the coasts so it is harder to attack.

Yep, pretty much anywhere would be devastating with a high enough yield. You'd have to be somewhere that's functional without outside influence, but also isn't of strategic importance. Not much of that to go around... the Galapagos I guess? Handful of people would hunt those islands to death in a few months though.
