The funny thing is, I bet the idea of wrecking a $60 chunk of metal would do a better job of motivating people to steer clear of the sawblade than the idea of losing a finger.

A finger's a finger. But $60? That's money.

I would definitely opt for this technology. I've seen a guy cut off a finger with a table saw before. Not pretty.

What if it accidentally saved you a $20k emergency room visit to sew your dismembered hand back together? A 60 dollar mistake i'll take.

I've seen this before. IIRC, the videos have been available for a couple of years.

VERY cool technology.

I have been using table saws and other tools that can cut off fingers in the blink of an eye for 30 years and have yet to cut any of my fingers. Why do I need this again? This is a tool for dumbasses, or today's youth since they need their hand held on everything so they don't hurt themselves.

Christ - even if I knew it worked I don't know if I could overcome my instinct to not put any part of my flesh against a rapidly moving saw blade

yea saw it when it came out. i think later in the segment they show the arrestor device, basically a metal chunk that works like a crumple zone to dissipate the rather large chunk of energy..that bits disposable.

its clever. people make mistakes. ronstang....u can be smug until the sh*t hits the fan

A few years ago I was unemployed for six weeks. I used the time to finish up a butcher block table project that had been languishing for years. A cabinet maker friend allowed me to use his wood shop for the project. He had every power tool a woodworker could dream of including a planer, a jointer, scroll saw, etc. The only toy he wouldn't let me drive was the table saw. He worked in a woodworker supply store and he said that of the various injuries that his customers would sport, the table saw inflicted ones were the worst and the most common. As he pointed out, in the time it takes to jerk your hand back, several hundred teeth have passed by.

I certainly don't think this device is meant to replace common sense and basic safety precautions, but sometimes, shit happens...saw operator slips, someone else slips and bumps into the saw operator, just so many things that, even with the proper safety precautions, could take off a finger...or more...

not many are dumb enough to stick their finger into the saw blade, the real damage comes from kickback.

I don't think the video mentioned. I'm guessing it's an electrical contact sensor using the saw blade as the conductor (kinda like those touch sensors for light control etc).

Fuck it must be awesome to be impervious to accident and misfortune. Also, to be a pretentious fuckwit. Is it as awesome as it looks?

I have a mechanic friend who had 30+ years of injury free work experience.

2 years ago he got his finger stuck in a reel grinder and just about lopped it off. A few months ago he got the ends of 3 fingers cut off when someone else turned an engine on that he was working on.

The sawstop is cool, but its been around for a while. That video is already from 2008.

That aside, I hear their table saws are built pretty well.

This was on Time Warp (the TV show) one day. Very slick and ingenious for sure.
