Saints Row: The Third

I decided to take the plunge and pre-order this game. There were apparently no threads about it in the PC gaming forum so I made my own.

Judging from the videos and reviews, SR3 is shaping up to be something awesome. Volition is really going over-the-top in terms of what you can do; in addition to performing wrestling moves on anyone you want, you can call in air-strikes, shoot people out of cannons, and pilot your own fighter jet. Also - taking a page from Just Cause 2 - you have infinite parachutes. You know, that kind of stuff.

RPS says that the combat is really good, especially melee. It's not an after-thought like in other games.

In essence,

SR1 was trying too hard to be GTA;
SR2 was a step in the right direction, but it was still trying to find it's feet;

People who have played Saints Row: The Third, however, say that it's the "definitive" Saints Row. This makes me incredibly happy. They know what they're doing with the game now and it looks awesome. Also, Volition has stated themselves that the PC version is being developed in-house alongside consoles. In other words, it won't be an atrocity of a port like SR2 was (it was outsourced to another company).

What are your guys's thoughts? Anyone pre-ordered this?

I played around with the "demo" on steam (The "Initiation Station") and I created my own character. I present to you Geralt of Rivia.

There's still some tweaks to be made; he still looks a little too baby-faced. Any character that you make in The Initation Station can be imported into the full game when it's released, so hopefully I can change him then.

I'll wait on this one. I played the second one and had a blast. The over the top action was fun, and I think I got it for $2 on a steam sale.

Well, the "demo" isn't really an actual demo. It's called "The Initiation Station" which only character-creator. Basically you're allowed to design your own character (or multiple characters, as many as you want) and then you can immediately import them into the game as soon as it's released.

So yeah, it doesn't really represent the final game, other than the amount of customization it has (which is actually pretty great). I can't really comment on it as such. For what it's worth though, it ran fine.

Yeh and supporting crossfire/SLI as well as Eyefinity/Nvidia Surround.
this should be much better this time around.

Looks entertaining in an over the top kind of way, but there are too many other exciting games coming out this holiday season. I have not played the previous SR games (tried SR2, but it had issues in Windows 7), and I will probably wait until this one come on sale for $5-10.

do you still own saints row 2? there are some fixes for most of the problems ..its a really fun game..it has some problems but i have a feeling that SR3 is going to bring them into the big leagues

SR2 was a great game, but as stated had serious performance issues and a few annoying control problems(vehicles way too sensitive). Had a blast with it though. From what I'm hearing the performance on PC is much better with SR3.

The game is pretty fun and a lot of fun to just play. I mean, it is so over the top wtf at times it is just awesome. The first two missions introducing you to the game are just great haha

Fun game. The combat is good, although I wish the guns had more "umph" to them. They're too quiet and they sound like pea-shooters. In general, the audio could be improved upon. I wish developers would understand that something simple like making guns LOUDER instantly makes them more satisfying. But other than that, it feels pretty good.

Driving cars is very pleasurable and fun. Very arcadey, very fast, and tight controls.

The melee is fun. Running up to enemies, swooping over their heads, and pounding their faces into the asphalt is pretty great. :thumbsup:

I'm still extremely early into the game, so I haven't unlocked the more outrageous vehicles and weapons quite yet. I expect them to be awesome.

Regarding performance: My 6950 1GB runs the game quite well at 1080p, maxed out settings. It frequently drops below 60fps in outdoor areas though (which is where you spend most of your time obviously). Good enough for me, but I'm sure the framerate would be boosted if I bumped the AA from 8x down to 4x or 2x.

For comparison, while maxed out, the game still looks and performs better than GTA4 on the same card (there are some good lighting and post-processing effects used here). As a whole though, the graphics are nothing special. It looks very console-ish, especially in the blocky character models. The environments are very good though... of course, until you look at certain objects up-close and you can see where the textures and polygon-count are lacking. The foliage, i.e. trees and grass, leave something to be desired as well. The PC version does offer plenty of different graphics options, which is good.

I'll definitely keep playing and post more thoughts as I go on.

I am pretty excited about this game.

I played SR2 to death on the PS3 and Xbox Coop. SR2 on the PC was sooooo horrible though.

Is this game steamworks? Can anyone tell me how easy it is to join up with friends in Coop?

I agree. The DLC are some stupid shit. They're selling cheats for $3 extra, and in case that wasn't retarded already, they're doing one of those "Season Pass" things which is essentially a pre-order for future missions that will be made and added into the game. Looks like they're really trying to milk as much money as they can.

The only thing they could've done worse is released Day-1 DLC for extra missions and quests. Adding new weapons and stuff is one thing, but when you deliberately release an incomplete game and release the missing content as DLC, that makes my goddamn blood boil.

But alas... what can I do. I probably sound like an old man complaining about trivial things. Maybe I'll buy all the DLC a year or two down the road when the game's on a special weekend sale with everything half off, similar to what Borderlands has done. It's very possible considering the replay value of the game. I just might buy extra content if the price is right.

One thing that I think we need to keep in mind when it comes to DLC is looking at it in a sense of budgetary allocation. Unfortunately, this is information that we're not exactly privy to. Although, what I mean is that if a DLC was created under a separate set of funds from the actual "game development bucket", then it's technically a separate effort.

It might be valid to argue though that the manpower required could be removing people from other necessary aspects of game development (necessary tweaking, polishing, etc.)

You know, if that cat suit thing was included instead of making it preorder only I would probably buy it today after looking at some video. Now I'll wait for a <$10 Steam sale. I dont like the idea of getting nickel and dimed over stuff that should have been in the game to begin with. It does look like they did a good job on the PC version.
