Thanks for understanding what I wanted to say! I am doing EE and I know it's an average salary if I compare it with SW people. No, its not in SC. My location will be in Oregon. Does salary vary with location? I guess OR is better than CA while comparing living cost.

I always take these with a grain of salt but there's a CoL comparison for Hilsboro vs Santa Clara.

Ignoring housing the difference isn't huge but OR is cheaper.

I like this calculator as well:

Yes, salary varies by location.

Take the job and get some experience. The first job is always the hardest one to get. Spend a year or two gaining experience and you will make yourself much much more marketable.

so in that case my getting an $83k offer in Silicon Valley was an insult if his should've been 120k? lol

anyway for OR, your offer is excellent I'd say. I would've said 83k was average in Silicon Valley. you could get higher maybe at Apple, or if you did software say Google, Facebook, or even other companies I wouldn't have been surprised if you pushed 90k.

OP, you can always compare at Glassdoor also.

Looks pretty standard: http://www.glassdoor.com/GD/Salary/...O18,35.htm?filter.experienceLevel=FOUR_TO_SIX

And as a side story I once negotiated for more and the guy rescinded my offer. Obviously not a large corporation, but I thought he was a dick. Offer was $20k under my competing offer. I was ready to take the lower offer since it was more relevant to my degree and I figured it'd be a better stepping stone, but figured I had to try at least. I would've been ok if he said no, but got screwed instead. Heh. Well at least i have the higher paying job now.

I interviewed there too, Az location with my Masters in ChemE. Seemed great but all my firends that got jobs there work a ton of hours.

Tool owners as others eluded too, on call 24/7. Money, benefits are great but I hear people hate it.

Intel had massive layoffs a few years ago, they will come again...

That may be the problem with working chemE. You're stuck on the manufacturing floor. I guess I'm glad I didn't pursue fab stuff as intensely as I wanted to.

Thanks for all that input. Seems like there are quite a few from intel here! Considering a conservative estimate, how much people usually get paid as bonus for grade 5?

When the HR offered me the position over phone, he was emphasizing how considering bonus my total compensation will go more than 91K.

It is why I discount the housing portion. It is realistic but it represents ability to buy as well as to rent. I saw a calculator that broke down average rent and average mortgage and that really broke down the idea that you might be moving to a place with slightly higher rent but much higher housing prices.

It at least lets you know that you are trading off the ability to afford buying a house at all.

The bonuses are based upon the company's financial performance primarily - the past few years the bonuses have been really healthy because of the high profits of the company.

There are 3 bonuses given in a year, once in late January, once in early Feb., and once in late July.

That's a good starting salary even in the Bay Area. In Oregon?? I imagine you can live like a King on $82k + bonuses.

OP, I don't know as much since I didn't accept my Intel offer, but I was got offered 90k with a B.S.

This was in the bay area, though. So I think like 8k of that was due to expensive living of the area. It would have been lower in Oregon.

EDIT: To all you guys saying this guy is bragging/trolling, stop being so short sighted. For a new grated in CompE, you can get paid anywhere from 70-90k. Having a MS bumps this up even more. The thing is, its hard for new graduates to know exactly what salaries are competitive, since everybody in society is brainwashed to think sharing salaries is bad. For example, I was considering taking an offer for 55k after graduating with a B.S.. Thankfully I didn't in the end (only because i wanted to be over 60). I ended up with multiple 90k offers.

That is just the pay in this field. Last time I checked, CompE was the highest paying engineering for new grads.

OP is asking a valid question.
