does anyone here know or know a good place to find out, what normal starting salary is for an entry level researcher in the biochem or microbio fields.

I'm looking for a job now, and I know that I will be asked and I don't want to either ask for too much or sell myself short.

thanks

salary.com sucks, there numbers are so far out of the stratosphere you may as well go to employers with a clown nose and wizard's hat on, you'll have a better chance.

Not really. I found out a good value for my job because my employer paid a firm for a study based on our size, industry, and location. Salary.com says I'm worth about $15k more than I am being paid, but I find that very hard to believe.

lol, in other words... you don't want to think it's right because if it is, you're getting ripped off by 15k.

I have seen $15K differences on the same job. One at$25K, the other at $40K. A $15K swing at almost any pay level isn't that unbelievable.

Though I agree salary.com is a tad high.

In small businesses in the same location I'd say it is.

Salary.com is just about worthless, so I'll give you my input. I am an analytical chemist with a BS that has been in the field for about six years now and have been around the block a bit.

Do you have a BS or is it a graduate degree? Also what part of the country do you live in?

The science industry sucks big time, and the starting salary for entry level people are very low. Again, depending on your degree and location don't be surprised to see something like ~$30k - or even less. I have known people that started at $28k/year, another was something like $12.50/hour one job I had paid $14.50/hour - but for starting out I would say (again depending on factors) low $30k is probably about par.
The industry is also very small so unless you live in an area that has a high concentration of companies (e.g. Boston) don't be surprised if you have to move. I recently had to move from north Texas to central Pennsylvania to move up the ladder just a bit.

Stay in school and work on a PhD, for even a Master's is not really considered any "better" than a bachelor's degree.

Any of those sites will give you an answer but I don't know anyone that actually makes what those sites say is the "average"
