Salt water

I had the biopsy done on that lump in my mouth yesterday. They told me to rinse my mouth frequently with warm salt water. what does adding salt to the water do (other than make it taste like shit?)

Anything more than about 2 shakes of salt from a salt shaker in about 12 oz. of water makes me gag and dry heave like crazy. Is 2 shakes of salt in 12 oz. of water enough? I hate warm beverages, and especially warm water.

whats the best way to get around this?

I believe it's along the lines that salt is suppose to helps control / fight infection. Ever hear of rubbing salt in wounds? Honey and lemon tea would be another option I guess which isn't as bad to swallow, but given you said you don't like warm beverages I don't know what to say.

The only thing about salt and wounds I've ever heard is that it hurts like a bitch.

I might be able to do the honey and lemon tea. Does it have to be warm or would it taste like ass when it's cold? I assume I would be adding the lemon and honey myself right, because I drink Turkey Hill lemon tea all the time and I doubt that has much redeeming factors.

two shakes is nothing, don't be a wimp, take your medicine

for 12 oz, a good rinse solution is more like 2-3 teaspoons of salt

it also says use 2 teaspoons per 8 ounces.


i don't know how i can rinse with salt water if it makes me gag/dry heave/puke the second it touches anywhere in my mouth.

Salt is a mild antiseptic. Plus the rinsing action helps free up and get rid of dead flesh and icky stuff.

I want to do what the doctor says but when I can't keep the water in my mouth for more than 2 seconds, that poses a problem.

If I keep doing the diluted water but do it more often, would that work or does it need to be the full dose?

Dude, its really not that bad. You arent supposed to swallow it or let it go to the very back of your mouth.

My guess is that because salt water has a much higher salinity than the inside of the bacteria cells it sucks out the water via osmosis, killing them.

It does hurt like a bitch, but it helps As for the tea, yes you make yourself. If you don't mind cold tea I can't see why you'd mind it cold with some honey and lemon. Warm would be better as it wont irritate inflammations and it's easier to dissolve the honey in.

Looking it up the salt is suppose to dry up any bacterial infection in the throat. Honey has different properties that also fight infection and aid healing.

If you have an infection, the salt water should help lyse the cells in your throat. The salt water solution is hypertonic to the cells and water will flow out, thereby reducing inflammation.

As others have said, it's a mild antiseptic. I suppose it's because of the difference in osmotic pressure.

its not bad, or so he thinks. its not attached to any bone or anything and it doesn't seem to be growing. It wasn't causing me any pain or discomfort (well, until they friggin sliced it open) either, so they say thats a really good sign. It may be benign.

its not bad, or so he thinks. its not attached to any bone or anything and it doesn't seem to be growing. It wasn't causing me any pain or discomfort (well, until they friggin sliced it open) either, so they say thats a really good sign. It may be benign.
