At college, there was a nearby liquor store that sold things on the really cheap. Well, at the end of the winter season, the Sam's Seasonal White Ale hadn't sold so well, so they sold them on "clearance" at $10 per case, that's 24 bottles to the uninitiated. Ya, we loaded up on that real quick. Sam's White Ale isn't my favorite by any means, but at $.42 a beer, you can't go wrong

The only seasonal Sam Adams I really love is Octoberfest. Summer Ale is good, but I'd honestly rather have a Corona or Landshark this time of year.

Yep. Beer snobs are definitely disillusion. Any expensive/imported/micro brew is only marginally, if at all, any better than Sam Adams or any other macro. It's just millions of people making up their preferred tastes so they can belong to a group. Beer snobs don't hate Bud/Coors/Sam Adams (to a lesser degree, IMO) because they're elitist, they hate them because they're simply not good beers when compared to what else is out there - why is this hard to understand?

I dislike Papa John's, Pizza Hut, Domino's, etc. because damn near any mom and pop pizzeria pizza I've ever had is better. Am I just making that up because of hatred of "the man?"

I agree, but I look forward to the day when I feel that isn't the case.

Well, an imperial stout is basically the IPA of the stout world. It's about the most heavily hopped stout you'll find. So it makes sense.

Been to any beer sites lately?

Sam Adams is the Budweiser of microbrews.

People hate on Sam Adams cus it's large. All the beer snobs only will drink beer that no one has heard of.

Beer snobs hate on Sam Adams because it's mediocre disguising itself as something special, and not because it's large.

Better tasting then the mega breweries, and alot more tastier then some of the micro's I've been to around here. May Sam Adams haunt your dreams sir!

The worst micro brewery is 100x better than anything Sam Adams could ever hope to make. Just like the shittest mom and pop pizza place is infinitely better than any chain.

/snob rant over

Sam Adams is a microbrewery. I don't think beer snobs hate on Sam Adams because it's the largest craft brewery, but because it's mediocre for the price. Beer snobs love sierra nevada and I think they are the #2 largest microbrewery in the U.S.

Re: Sam Adams.

I give them credit for putting out the different varieties. Their craft packs help open the door for many people to try different styles of beer. They have very good variety of styles that they produce.

Having said that though, a lot of their stuff just isn't that good when compared other brands of that style. It's flavor, body and aroma are all too...sterile.

Because IPAs are awesome. Whenever I go out, I'll ask what's on tap and if it's Widmer, Bridgeport, or Full Sail IPA I'll get that and it's always delicious.

Out of the three though, Bridgeport is the best. In fact I just had a limited release Imperial IPA from them called "Hop Czar" that was heavenly. I could only find it at New Seasons though, and $5 for a 22 oz bottle isn't something I'll be able to make a habit of.

I got a bottle of Hop Czar with a slice of pizza at Vincente's a few weeks back. It was really tasty if I recall correctly. But it's an IPA, so being a beer snob, I guess I'm required to like it (which I didn't know before reading this thread).

I can't say I'm much of an IPA fan. Definitely some good ones out there that I'll have from time to time, it's just not my style.

I flippin' love IPA - the hoppier the better, can never have enough hops

but Imperial Russian Stouts are my fav and are sooo much more elitist. People claim to be able to taste like 15 ingredients. I haven't checked beeradvocate or other sites in years, but I distinctly remember when I first found the site like 5 yrs ago rasputin imperial russian stout was ranked one of the highest. At the time I had been drinking rolling rock - so you can imagine the surprise that was haha (couldn't even mix it in a milkshake it was toooo strong for me). After a year or so of drinking Guinness and other dark beers + specialties I had another imperial russian and loved it.

the rest they say is history...mostly b/c i don't remember the rest : (

Beer Advocate gives the Sam Adams Imperial Stout a B+ average of 314 reviews.
http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/35/47360

We are JUST NOW able to buy these beers in Alabama. A bill signed on May 22nd allows the sale of beer with an ABV of under 14%. The previous limit was 6%. There are only a couple places that have a decent stock of the gourmet beers. I haven't visited any of them yet. I'm stuck drinking the last Old Scratch I had in the fridge.

Russian Imperials are a hardcore beer.
I've had this once:
http://www.northcoastbrewing.com/beer-rasputin.htm

I can't even begin to describe the flavor of that stuff. It's like...sardines mixed with extra bitter dark chocolate and then reduced in a simmering pan of day old coffee.

yes, even as a Stone fan, i must say their Imperial Stout sucks; and Rasputin one is light years ahead. And, it is actually more available in local supermarkets than Stone's.

i also like Beamish too

Sam Adams makes some decent beer, and its good that we have it, because if you go to any bar they are at least going to have Sam Adams(in my area), so you are not stuck with the really crappy beer. Their summer ale is quite tasty and so is their octoberfest. There lager is fine...but for some reason I hate their winter lager.

Sam Adams is no local Microbrew but it is pretty damn good. I guess I am kind of a beer snob, but I will recognize that Sam Adams deserves more credit for its beers, and that a lot of microbreweries are not all that great....again that being said..a good microbrew is 10x better than a Sam Adams.

BUT! Sam Adams has class and that goes a long way. When the price of hops went up and out of control, putting small breweries in trouble, Sam Adams sold their hops at low prices to them. Sam Adams had long term contracts with suppliers that did not change the price they got their hops at. Sure helping microbrews helps out Sam Adams in the long term..but it still is a classy move.
