I don't get this bit from the rightie free speech warriors. It's not an attack on your free speech when someone asks you to address them in any particular fashion. You're not required to actually do so, although it might be a polite courtesy if you did.

That doesn't make the point you appear to think it makes. If I was your landlord, and I repeatedly addressed all my formal correspondence to you as "Miss Loser Bitch," for example, you'd push for a law to stop that too.
And given that just being gay in NYC was a felony within my lifetime, and the fact that tens of millions of Americans desperately want being LGBT to be a felony again, it's very clear to me as to just who are the oppressors and who are the oppressed here.
But that's the thing, isn't it? Some people see freedom as a zerosum game. The freedom of others always threatens them, for some reason.

My take is that if you hold some view, say that pronoun people are nuts, in my opinion a very rational position to take, but when you come across a proponent of that belief you can't giggle and move on but become transfixed like a bug on a pin and can't move on it's because your bigotry has been challenged. In thin case, instead of simply noting the craziness of people would up by pronouns, you see them as some sort of threat, it is because they threaten your world view and the ego validation it confers. Lots of people, apparently, and on the right in particular, have built up an ethos that they are heroes by defending traditional language and their ego is built up and magnified by this feeling there's virtue to be had by being a member a group of similar thinkers. Every activist bigot is at war for the sake of protecting his or her self image and self respect. This is the ultimate in poverty, not to have organic inborn self respect that arises out of the joy of being.

No I wouldn’t. A landlord should be able to call their tenants whatever they want and the tenants should be able to respond the same. They don’t have to do business together if they don’t want to. Big Gov doesn’t need to step in and police the speech because somebody might get their feelings hurt.

And you said there wasn't a required/compelled speech which there is. It does make the point I think it makes.

Not foreign to me, still never heard of Sam Smith. I shall worry about which pronoun to use if I ever meet the person.

That said "they" is a clumsy pronoun to use for a known individual in certain grammatical situations.
