A few months back, I converted my Win2k server to linux/samba/cups/apache. All is relatively well (everything works), but I'm constantly getting nmbd looping errors. If I don't killall nmbd connections, it'll eat up all possible open files, then totally hang the machine, needing a reboot to fix it. My linux box is running Debian (woody/stable) and here are some config files:
smb.conf (the important area)
# Global parameters
[global]
passwd program = /usr/bin/passwd %u
obey pam restrictions = Yes
passwd chat = *Enter\snew\sUNIX\spassword:* %n\n *Retype\snew\sUNIX\spassword:* %n\n .
encrypt passwords = Yes
server string = %h server (Samba %v)
syslog = 0
log file = /var/log/samba/log.%m
netbios name = Tunaroll
invalid users = root
max log size = 1000
hosts allow = 192.168.0.
workgroup = workgroup
security = server
preferred master = auto
admin users = vash
local master = yes
preferred master = auto
domain master = yes
create mask = 0775
directory mask = 0775
write cache size = 262144
level2 oplocks = yes
socket options = IPTOS_LOWDELAY TCP_NODELAY
log level = 1
read raw = yes
write raw = yes
oplocks = yes
max xmit = 65535
dead time = 5
getwd cache = yes
lpq cache time = 30
printcap name = cups
printing = cups
wins support = yes
interfaces = 192.168.0.40/24 127.0.0.1/8
bind interfaces only = yes
inetd.conf
netbios-ns dgram udp wait root /usr/sbin/tcpd /usr/sbin/nmbd -a
netbios-ssn stream tcp nowait root /usr/sbin/tcpd /usr/sbin/smbd
swa tstream tcp nowait.400 root /usr/sbin/tcpd /usr/sbin/swat
Here is what /var/log/daemon.log looks like for the looping errors:
Jul 25 07:27:34 tunaroll inetd[193]: /usr/sbin/tcpd: exit status 0x1
Jul 25 07:27:34 tunaroll nmbd[8774]: connect from tunaroll
Jul 25 07:27:34 tunaroll inetd[193]: /usr/sbin/tcpd: exit status 0x1
Jul 25 07:27:34 tunaroll nmbd[8776]: connect from tunaroll
Jul 25 07:27:34 tunaroll inetd[193]: /usr/sbin/tcpd: exit status 0x1
Jul 25 07:27:34 tunaroll nmbd[8778]: connect from tunaroll
Jul 25 07:27:34 tunaroll inetd[193]: /usr/sbin/tcpd: exit status 0x1
Jul 25 07:27:34 tunaroll nmbd[8780]: connect from tunaroll
Jul 25 07:27:34 tunaroll inetd[193]: /usr/sbin/tcpd: exit status 0x1
Jul 25 07:27:34 tunaroll inetd[193]: netbios-ns/udp server failing (looping), service terminated
This error happens quite frequently and just fills up /var/logdaemon.log. The goal of the Samba is to serve files, WINS and printing via CUPS, I believe the config of smb.conf is correct. If anyone wants another log file posted, or has other questions, I'll be glad to post back.
