Samsung 56

Samsung 56" 1080p DLP HDTV

Not sure if this a hot deal or not, but I'm going to get it.
One question to peopel that know. I know costco return policy is great. I'm not going to be on of those people that keep it 2 years then upgrade it, but if it has a mail in rebate can you still return it if you already got the rebate. If so I would not get the rebate just for the piece of mind of know if anything goes wrong I can return it.

Thanks for any answers.

Just make sure you go to avsforum and check up on this model. Some Sammy's have huge issues, while others are great. Looks like a good deal otherwise. I think the rebate is for the HD Directv reciever and not for the tv itself.

rebate is for a free dvd recorder, i think.
Sammy's have no more or less issues than any other brand of tv, imho.
For another 100 bucks, you can get the 61incher

With 1080p sets you can go alot bigger since you can sit closer to it. Theres absolutely no visible pixel structure.

The samsungs also do a great job of taking in 1920x1080 resolution via vga.

61inch pc gaming is crazy fun.

Does this set accept 1080p signals? I looked around and it doesn't seem to, but couldn't find a definative answer.

It does over VGA/RGB, not with hdmi/dvi.

Not much of an issue, the picture over vga is outstanding. Hdmi will actually sync, but theres crazy cutoff and its not been resolved. Theres talk a future "update" might address this, but i wouldnt bet on it.

Again not really an issue. Even if blueray/hdvd/ps3 ouptputs 1080p, the original source would be encoded at a much lower rez anyway, its simply a matter of where the upcoversion will happen. 1080p input on the hdmi would be nice, but its not the uber issue ppl make it out to be.

I am pretty sure Blu-Ray will be encoded at 1080p for the discs. From what I hear it is a smaller footprint to put 1080p on a disc than 1080i.

I heard that as well, alot of early discs with 1080p printed on the cover.

I still think its a moot point. When the players come out, and you sit this samsung fed 1080i next to a HP set with 1080p over hdmi, i think the difference would be negligible to non existent.

Movement is fine. 1080i-1080p is alot simpler than upscaling 480i.

The samsung has no problems whatsoever upscaling the current 1080i content, either movies or live action.

Prices keep on going down on these sets.
OP. Please add the price to the title by rule.

I know the rebate is for a dvd-r. But if i get the DVR can i never take the tv back?
Or can i if i take the dvr back too? I'm a little nervous about a big buy and thier return policy is the only thing let me dig into my pockets

I don't know if it matters, but it's been $2899 for a long time now, i'd say it's the retail price. I considered this TV for a while, but decided it was too expensive. The TV is in many stores, like Costco and Circuit City, so if you want you can go check it out first. The picture isn't very impressive when compared to plasmas/lcds.

Yeah, it's nice looking, but where do you put your other A/V components?

Unless they got it this week, Circuit City does not carry the 1080p series (HLR-xxx8)

I have been looking to get the same sammy, just not the pedestal design. You should be able to find cheeper (most these links are dead, but check around)
http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview...atid=40&threadid=1756924&enterthread=y
but your right, its worth the piece of mind buying from Costco.

The best price Ive seen for the table top version is ~ 2800 shipped (from Brooklyn, NY )

http://www.abesofmaine.com/viewproduct.asp?id=sshlr5668w

FYI HLR-abcd (check samsungs sight but these are the basic differences)
ab: size
c: 5 = ~ 3years old, 6&7 table top (7 has cable card included), 8 same as 7 but pedestal
d: 7 not 1080p, 8 = 1080p

if anyone gets a chance, take a look at the Jan 2006 issue of Perfect Vision. Talks about how some mfg TVs do not display the full resolution that you paid for. JVC, Hitachi, Pioneer, and I think Fujitsu, are the only ones across the board that passed.
