Coming out soon is the 17 inch 710T with 600:1 contrast ratio 12 ms responce time and 16.7 milllion colors. Finally a decent 17 inch gaming lcd. Also the Samsung 910T is coming out based on PVA rather then TN technology it has a disappointing responce time of 25 ms, I hope this is a mistake because it has nothing new or better then previous 19 inch PVA monitors.... where is DCCII ?

Yea..I have a 710T coming in on Wednesday this week. I will promptly, if possible, post a review. No one replied to my other thread, but any suggestions for tests to run?

Dayom, I was about to drop on the 172X to finally replace my 19" CRT for gaming/full time workage. Thanks for the heads up, this 710T is also cheaper than its older brother

Excelsior, I would be very interested in reading your views on it. I would suggest taking a fast paced game such as Unreal Tournament 2003 or 2004, if you don't have them you can use the free demo and use the built-in benchmarking program or set up a botmatch and spectate so that you can free your hands and eyes to scrutinize the image more. I hope it's a good one

They are not coming out soon, I have had mine for a few weeks already. This is by far the best lcd I have seen, but I have also never seen the 172X. The best part is the price is not near $600, which I would have thought it would be.

I've really been debating purchasing this monitor. At first, like you, I was going to get the 172x, but then I saw the 710T. The only thing that the 172x wins is looks by a small margin, but otherwise, the 710T seems to be better in everything else, including price.

My only concern is this: how is Samsung with RMAs? I am just a little hesitant because of dead pixels

They probably have a 5-8 pixel policy, but to be honest, from the few people I have heard who got this monitor, Samsung's quality control is superb. Don't think I have heard of one dead pixel on a 710T.

Pilotronx - Sure, no problem. I will most likely run UT2004 side-by-side with my CRT. Ive had experience with a VP171b, so I hope it is better than it. I know one thing, the Vp171B was verrrry bright, and the 710T is brighter. :Q

Ah ok

I am highly considering this monitor. I am waiting for a few professional reviews, but I also would like to take advantage of Dell's good price. I find it odd I guess that Newegg.com has it listed for $479 but only 16.2 million colors. Dell lists the monitor with 16.7 million and so does zipzoomfly.com, but zipzoomfly.com's price is $511. I wonder why Newegg.com has a different Max. Color?

No, I think the 172X is only actually capable of doing thousands of colours at once (it supports 16.2 million but cannot display this many at once) since the 172X, like the Hitachi 12ms screens is a 6-bit LCD instead of the usual 8-bit.

More info on this can be found here.

I was also looking into gettin a 172x but decided on getting a 191T for the increased screen size and better ability to display colours a couple months ago. Since I game on my 19" CRT mostly, the LCD is primarily for text and graphics, and the 191T can display millions of colours like all high-response time 8-bit LCDs (to the best of my knowledge).

Check the specs again. They have two different types of screens. 710T is a TFT/TN screen and 172X is a TFT/PVA. Tomshardware has a lot of good info on the screen types and he said that PVA is the better quality screen and newer tech than TFT/TN. Anand also has a nice write up about the different LCD techs. I would do some research before buying the 710T. There is a reason it's cheaper than a 172x.

What I wanna know is if ghosting in shooters is still a problem? Have you tried any fast-paced games Will? I'd love to jump on the LCD bandwagon, but every time I check out a new LCD it still has too much ghosting in FPS titles (UT, BFV, Far Cry) for my taste. LMK & thanks!

I tried Unreal Tournament, and it looked great to me. I also played the GTR demo, and it did pretty well. NBA Live 2k4 looked well too.

Edit: I think it is still a subjective issue. You may still notice ghosting, others may not. Have you tested any 16ms displays?

Interesting monitor.

Has anyone tried running games in 1024x768 on the 710T and seeing how they look? I don't want to be forced to upgrade my video card (ti 4400) just because it can't drive games in an LCDs native resolution. Not expecting perfection, but passable would be nice.

This reason it's cheaper is because it's fugly. Don't take it personal, but that thing is just plain ugly. No style what-so-ever.

I'll hang with my 172x. I wanted to go with the 173p but the response time is too slow.

Hey Will, yeah I've played around with a couple of Samsung's 19" models here at work and the ghosting was just too bad for me. My eyes were killing me after about 15 minutes of UT2004 so I decided to hold off until they get that under control. We'll probably get the 710T's in eventually because we order a LOT of flat panels, so I'll check it out and see how much of an improvement it is. Thanks for the info!

The last one I checked out was a Dell 1901FP (Samsung rebadge) and I don't think it has 16ms response.

Yeah, it is 25ms. Might want to check out some with at least 16. That would/should be a big difference.

I am very interested in the Samsung 710T monitor. There are still no professional reviews (that I can find) and I would like to hear some more thoughts on this monitor. I still am confused as to which type of panel it uses: TN or PVA?? I've seen so many websites selling this mysterious monitor with cross specs (i.e. one says 16.2 million colors with a PVA panel while one says 16.2 with TN while one says 16.7 with TN ... well you get the idea).

I will probably order the monitor from Dell.com, because the price is very appealing with the 10% discount. By the way, Dell's website has the specs for the monitor being 16.7 Million colors with a TN panel.

Thanks for any information.

It is a TN panel, and even though some websites, including samsungusa show it with 16.7 million colors, I think it is probably 16.2. Does it really matter though?
