Where did these things come from? With the Hydis, AU Optronics, and the panel on the 172x all out, I thought the 17" LCD category had been set. Now it seems that Samsung has a new 17" LCD aggressively priced towards the mainstream. Newegg has the 710V (analog version) listed at $419 right now. With a 12 ms response time and other shining on-paper numbers, the 710 series seems like a good buy and the 710T (digital version) seems like it might undercut the 172x.

So my question is... does anyone know anything specific about these new monitors? Has anyone seen them in action or compared them against other monitors? The numbers seem rather suspicious for the price that they're being advertised at, so I was hoping if anyone is willing to offer some testimonials. If the actual performance resembles its stated specifications, I might just forsake DVI capability on LCDs and go straight for the 710V with its attractive price.

I'd like to know too. I'm ready to get one asap and the 710T looks like the one I want.

See my impressions of the 710T here.

I just got this monitor a few days ago, and I have to say it has surpassed my expectations. It is an extremely bright monitor (so much so that I had to lower the default settings significantly) with minimal if any noticable ghosting. One tiny quirk I've noticed is that the default colors render slightly toward the blues, so I've been playing with Magic Tune software included to try to correct this. Overall a great monitor though.

I like the fact that it has the full 16.7M color reproduction. No interpolation like on the 172X.

It certainly sounds like a great monitor....makes me wonder - What's the catch?

Hopefully it is as good as the specs make it look.

I've decided to go with 710T, but I can't find one locally for a reasonable price.
I can get one online for CAD$625+shipping (bad return policy) or locally for CAD$787(!!!). Quite a difference. But I don't want to get it cheap from a place where I cannot return it in case I get bad pixels right out of the box.

Anyone have store ideas for East Canada?

Thanks.

I just got a 710T today, I ordered it through Dell for $475 (10% off). The screen on my laptop is acting up so I bought this screen to use with my laptop until the GeForce 6800's come out and I build my desktop. I have it hooked up to the analog connection. So far the colors and clearity blow away my two year old Dell laptop (I figured it would). Best of all zero dead pixels. It is thicker than the 172X due to the power brick being in the screen and not separate. I have not played any games yet, but the features on this screen are great. It comes with analog and digital cables, height adjust, tilt, and comes with software so if you twist the screen 90 deg the picture straighens out (basically have a portrait screen instead of the usual landscape). By specs it is the best screen out there and at a reasonable price, I just couldn't resist buying it and don't regret it.

Not sure if this will help you Garfield, I live in western Canada and just ordered my from Compusmart. Granted I got a staff discount because I work for the local cable company ($698 +tax), hopefuly they have a Compusmart out your way because thier return policy is 2nd to none!

I received my 710T from Dell.com the very next day that I ordered it (around 3 days ago is when I recieved it) and I must say, I am very impressed. I too was curious what the "catch" is, being so aggressivly priced and yet having better specs than the 172X, but all I can come up with is the design. I love the way it looks, but the 172X, because of its smaller size and foldable stand, may make it more geared towards "enthusiasts", but IMO, the 710T is a much better monitor. 600:1 contratst ratio means its very bright and the 16.7 million color reproduction can't be beat for the money.

and of course it is Samsung, so you really can't go wrong with them anyways.

Samsung 712N for $379.99 after rebate, at BestBuy and CompUSA.

BestBuy sale ad thread

600:1 contrast, 12ms response, etc.
Not sure what the difference is, spec-wise between the 710 and 712 models, but I thought that I would mention it.
