For desktops I benched my caviar blacks and they are what I thought......awsome for their capacity.

However in laptops there is NO GOING BACK!!!!! I am running on a SATA-I with no AHCI chipset support and it still flys.

Windows start and shutdown is about 50% faster but where I notice it, is in the multitasking, and opening applications. They are instant like owning an i7 system.

Now if the Samsung 830 lasts a long time, I will be really happy. But being an SSD in general I don;t plan on it,

I wouldn't bet against that drive. It will likely outlive your caviar blacks.

And welcome to the fast lane.

I have a 256Gb m4 in the mail for my laptop. I can't wait to get rid of the hdd, it's driving me crazy.

Once you go SSD you won't go back to platters. I have a 830 in my 5 year old system which has SATA2, easily one of the best upgrades I've ever purchased. Everything is just so much snappier. My laptop from work still have a HDD. I'm debating whether I should just shell out the money and get a 64GB SSD for the boot drive and drop the old drive into the multi bay (since I've never used the DVD anyway).

Got my m4 installed, unfortunately HP only supports SATA-II on this laptop.

used macrium reflect to clone to boot drive and C drive. I couldn't clone the HP rescue and HP utility drives, so I guess I'll have to do without

I'm saving the old drive just in case something should go wrong with this.

Congrats on the new drive. I just ordered the parts to upgrade my desktop (really, a rebuild), including a 256 GB 830. It's been a while since I checked, and the prices are a lot more reasonable than I thought, so I got a bigger drive than I had planned on.

I think that, in general, laptops tend to have a more laggy feel to them. One of the greatest benefits of ssd's is that they help to reduce lag time. Ergo, ssd + laptop =

You are 100% correct. Laptops do feel laggy. And I wonder why. Is it just the hard drives? The CPU in real world terms should be faster as they have a lot more cache than a desktop CPU (at least in most of the ones I have owned).

BTW what I used to think as fast, the 7k100 100GB IDE that I still own peaks out at 50 +/- mbps reads, and about 30 sustained. Pitiful if I do say so. Compare it to a 4200 rpm and you will really think you are back in the 486 days.

If you ever have to go back working on a 5400rpm laptop it would be considered some sort of computer hell. But congrats in making the change.

Someone should make laptops into the shape of a frisbee to take advantage of their shock-resistant awesomeness.

Welcome to the SSD club. And nope - there's just no way you can go back to an HDD after an SSD. Quick, responsive, no HDD crunching noise and delays, and just lots of fun to use.
