Hey guys,

So I decided to try this 840 pro 256gb. I had two samsung 830 128gb in raid 0, and everything was great except for loss of TRIM.

I setup the bios with AHCI, installed windows and noticed it required me to install windows with a GPT partition. Installed fine. Updated drivers, windows update, you know the standard stuff after a fresh install.

Now i'm getting random BSOD, all with the same error, storport.sys driver_irql_not_less_or_equal 0x000000D1.

Whats up with that. So I thought it was a fluke, reinstalled windows. Same thing. Hmmm... 20 reinstalls later and started using intel RSTe release before installing windows and other drivers. No luck.

Thought got a bad draw on the drive, when to Fry's, exchanged it, installed it. Same thing. Ugh!

UPDATE:
Per recommendation of one of the users here I reinstalled windows 7 with legacy boot option to set it up as a MBR partition table.

Good news, a different BSOD... I'll update with the correct error once I get home from work, since I had Virtual Memory disabled I did not get a dump file. But I'm going to say its the storage device/drivers, I feels it in me bones...

Any help is much appreciated :'(

Someone else already suggested trying a different driver. I concur.

1) First try msahci driver. Obviously you cannot do motherboard RAID with that, but you can do Windows software RAID 0. See how that goes.

2) Try a different version of RSTe. I see versions 3.2.0.1135, 3.5.0.1101, 3.5.1.1009 on Intel's site. It would be interesting to see if the older one has the same issue. Same thing for the newer one 3.5.1.1009

3) Try the non-enterprise RST. I saw a post from someone on hardforum that he is able to run the non-enterprise RST on his X79 board.

If all else fails try setting the bios to RAID and see if that helps.

2) Tried this last week with no luck.
3)Couldn't get it to work.

Thanks jwilliams4200.

Would you know what features/performance I lost using the MSAHCI driver?

Two 840pro 256's here in 2 different systems. No bsod's or other issues. One is oc'd, other isn't. Both set up as raid though. I found that if you set to ahci and decide to set up a raid array later, windows 8 (don't remember if this was the case with win 7) is unhappy, so I just set it to raid from the get go.

No GPT configs. While there are some benefits, until all the utils work properly with gpt disks, i'll stick to MBR.

GPz1100, The only problem I have with that is the loss of Trim. Since I have multiple VM's running I read and Write to the hard drive alot. I need Trim, which is why I moved from my 830's in raid 0 to a single 840 pro.

Now I dont know if setting the bios to Raid and installing windows as a single drive will allow trim to be enabled.

From what I understand, the Intel RST and RST(e) drivers do pass TRIM to non RAID members on a RAID system.

Just to elaborate, 2 SEPARATE 840 pro's, 1 in one machine, other in the other, bios sata mode set as RAID on both. Trim appears to be working as the samsung magician doesn't complain when I perform a manual trim.

I set the bios sata to raid because the raid0 is in place in one machine, and raid1 in the other. If no raid volume is defined, the controller treats it as just another sata ahci drive. Question still remains though if 2 ssd's were defined in a raid array, would trim still get passed on or not....

Trim is working in my RAID0 array on a Z68 chipset with the ROM modification.

So its been a while and wanted check if anyone else has encountered similar issues. I re-installed windows today and decided to try the new drivers on Intel RTSe drivers on the Asus site and I still blue screen.

Whats the deal with the Intel drivers?!?

This only seems to happen with the X79 chipset and samsung 840 pro in AHCI mode. I had the Samsung 830 and no problems.

I tested the samsung 840 pro in my friends system with Z77 chipest and the RST intel driver and no problems...

Can anyone tackle this strange phenomenon. Am I losing anything by using the standard microsoft AHCI driver? :'(

Thanks for the help as always
