Hi,

I'm going to buy an ssd to upgrade my mobile workstation (lenovo w520, i7 quad 2.30GHz, 16Gb ram, Nvidia Quadro 2000M, 500Gb 7200rpm).
My core activities are 3d modeling, rendering, photo editing.
This will be my first SSD.

Ok, the 850 PRO would be the best choice, but is priced €100 more than 850 EVO and M550, so I would like to avoid this choice if it is possible.

So, excluding the top and comparing the 850 EVO and M550 and considering they have same price, what's in your opinion is the best choice?

Thank you very much for all suggestions.

Regards

I personally would avoid the EVO until we learn what's happening with TLC. Word is the performance issues with the 840 EVO aren't fixed and may be related to the use of TLC.

My feelings as well. Avoid TLC drives!

The drive in question is the 850 EVO, not the 840 EVO. TLC V-NAND behaves a lot more like modern planar NAND, so the read performance bug and whatever is causing it does not apply to the 850 EVO.

I bought a 256 850 EVO for $110 shipped new, it's a great drive, has great benchmarks. I've had a 840 pro in my main PC for a while and I've never had a problem.

I'd stick to Samsung all the way

Unfortunately, my experience with my 840Pro was not all hugs and kisses... so I have 'unstuck' myself from Samsung. With the understanding that the M550 is not the equivalent of the 850Evo in performance, I'd take the Crucial... but that is based solely on my specific experience, YMMV as would the OP's.

It didn't apply to the 840 until it was found.

Really? Man, I'd rank the 840 Pro up there with the X25-M. Legendary drive. Still haven't seen one fail and I have one in a SQL server with 145TB of writes going nearly 3 years...

I personally had two 256GB 840 Pro's in RAID0 (1000MB/read, 900MB/write, 610MB random read) for over a year before upgrading to two Intel 730's.

In fact, I am not a huge Samsung fan (they don't seem to stick by their products for the long haul, look at phones, 840 EVO's, etc) but when Samsung does get it right, they really get it right.

Intel, on the other hand, may not always get it right either, but it's ALWAYS reliable. Their validation, especially since the 820 MTH chipset fiasco and SATA issues that plagued Cougar Point, has been exceptional if not industry-leading within their storage division.

But honestly, for the price, Samsung just knocks it out of the park. Crucial is a reliable choice for corporate workstations, but I personally use Samsung drives in my desktops and laptops because the value is better regarding warranty, performance and price.

Mine did, as well as a few others here at AT. Not that it isn't a bad drive, I have the refurb they sent me in my desktop PC where it seems to be doing well, but I just really don't trust it and back it up constantly. I just drew the short straw with my 840Pro....

Good discussion. I just ordered a 500GB 850EVO to replace a spinner as data drive in my laptop. The spinner will then become a backup.
