Samsung 850EVO going up?

The 850 EVO is, afaik, a currently shipping product with a MSRP. So any variation in price is up to the individual retailer.

Newegg prices based on supply and demand - it's all automatic. So if their expected shipment is a couple weeks away and they sold more than usual, price is automatically hiked a few bucks.

Amazon does the same thing. Most e-retailers do, in fact. Brick'n'mortar places can't really, since they have print ads and signage with advertised prices to honor. But their prices are usually higher to begin with.

Price history here might be interesting: http://pcpartpicker.com/product/3kL7YJ/samsung-internal-hard-drive-mz75e250bam

My understanding is RAM prices are going up, not SSDs. So it must just be an individual retailer thing & is temporary.

I got mine for $63 during the holidays and the 500GB for $133. Prices have been higher since but have gone on sale occasionally. I'm guessing it's just a money grab, SSD's are popular and Samsung in particular is very popular. Sites like Amazon take advantage of that.

Prices always fluctuate depending on market conditions. Amazon's price moves constantly depending on what their competitors are doing and is governed by an algorithm that monitors competitor pricing on items.

Beyond pricing, is the 850 EVO a good purchase in its price range? I read up on the Anandtech Review (from all the way back in 2014) and it seems the 850 PRO is much faster, but for a simple gamer is it even worth it?

More money gets higher performance, usually. And 850 EVO on sale is usually at a good spot in the price/performance curve.

Also waiting for this to go on sale again. My hard drive started making funny noises, so I looked it up and I had JUST missed an awesome sale on this SSD in mid-June 2016. Price keeps going up by like $10 every week since (with some fluctuations) :/

Still the SSD to beat, still has the most refined firmware, plus 5 year warranty, great speed, no degradation. I've been waiting for a sale on the 500 gb EVO but since it never seemed to come I just bit the bullet and bought one last week for $154. Oh well. Now that I'm up and running with it, I don't feel any regret and prefer having it than waiting for it to go on sale, that's for sure.

I mean if we're going to talk about things going up or down might as well talk stock market. But for electronics they just go down in the long run.

I had my company order around 25 1TB 850 Evos a few months ago when they were at 259. Great drives. Hell, I even bought a 2TB one for myself.

are prices for SSDs in general going up? If so what stocks can I start buying?

Not really, other manufacturers are cheaping out with random TLC NAND and no one has been able to emulate Samsungs secret sauce. The 850 Evo is the yardstick all others in the consumer arena are measured against. I think their prices are going up while others go down because of sheer demand.

I think you're right. While there might be some market forces at play to cause the price rise due to chips, I think they really are charging what they can because they can.

I do have to say the samsung 850 has been the best ssd for me with the old crucial m4 being next best. Surprising intel SSDs haven't been all that reliable for us.

Really? When you say "Intel SSDs", are you referring to ones with Intel's own SATAII controller (X25-M, G2, and G3 / Intel 320 Series), or their later ones with SandForce Gen2 controller (330, 510, 520, 530, 535)?

That's a poor excuse. It's still Intel's fault for choosing a lackluster SSD controller to be used with their drives.

The 1TB 850 EVO dropped by $20 on Newegg today so I pulled the trigger. It will likely drop lower but I just want to have it installed and working by this point.

got my first one at about $90 and second around 120. Haven't been able to come close to those since or would have picked up a third for my last computer.
