<< The 900NF is a great monitor. As for the 955DF, I'd rather get something else that can support 1280x1024 at a higher refresh rate than 75Hz, preferably. I don't know about you guys, but I can definitely tell the difference between 75Hz and 85Hz flicker-wise. 75Hz is not sufficient.

Question: How does ebates work and where is the 3% discount deducted?

Thanks!

To do ebates, you sign up, and buy stuff through their link to Dell... Then, after your transaction, the purchase will show up in your ebates account, and when you accumulate like 5 bucks in ebates, they cut you a check. Feel free to use my referral link if its cool with you.

The 900NF is much much better than the sub par 900DF. I was very disappointed in the 900DF because of geometry problems and the colors looked washed out.

The Hitachi 721F is a very good monitor for under $300, better for games than text though.

Hopefully you smart folks can help me make the decision on this.

I'm currently in the beginning stages (acquiring parts) of building a dedicated arcade pc. I will not be using for anything other than Pacman-->Mortal Kombat. Therefore, I don't need anything higher than 1024x768 (in fact, I'm probably going with 800x600 because I'm pretty sure that's all I need). Since I can get a decent 17" monitor for under $100, I don't want to spend a ton for an extra two inches (did you ever think anyone would ever admit to that? ).

I'm thinking of buying the 955DF. Would the 955DF be good for what I'm going to be using it for or are it's problems going to affect me in my case to the point where I might not want to buy it? Is there another lower-priced 19" monitor that's pretty flat that will work well for how I'm going to be using it? Best Buy has a MAG 19" for $150 after rebate, but I'm not to sure I want to buy that.

Thanks for your help.

The Samsung SyncMaster 955DF is the best "bang for your buck" 19" CRT monitor you can buy. If you don't mind downgrading I'd also consider the 17" version, the 753DF (bought that for my wife for $89 shipped from Dell.com after coupons and MIR a few months ago).

I have this monitor and I love it, the only problem is that it's beginning to become discolored in one corner after about a year and a half. Sadly, I don't THINK there's anything I can do. It's only about an inch or two, so I can live with it. Any ideas what may have caused this or what I could've done to prevent it?

Ignoring that this is the wrong forum: the one time I've had corner discoloration, I'd caused it by placing a magnetically unshielded speaker too close. It's unlikely that you've made that error as today's computer speakers are shielded.

Remember that the geometry of the tube can't change and there aren't moving parts, so there's not much to go wrong with just a small area except burning a pattern in the phosphors -- which shouldn't happen in one year -- or a magnetic disturbance which deflects the electron beams -- like my speaker.

I've seen monitors which occasionally required de-Gaussing -- elimination of an acquired magnetic field in the unit. The 900NF has a user control labeled "degauss" for this purpose; I expect using it will solve your problem. Good luck!

The 900 NF (or the 959 NF here in Europe, I think it's newer) would be my second choice. My first would be the LG 915FT +, I believe techonweb.com has is for $297 before shipping.

i like the 753DF.. very nice for the price... the problem w/ the DF series is you can't do anything higher than 1024@85hz (17" monitors, i just need one small step up to 11xx, not 1280). The monitors that have the AG tube also have the faint wires... dunno if i could get used to them. Now, if they had a spectacular deal on the 700NF or similiar.. i'd be willing to adjust to AG

Try adjusting the PURITY setting in the controls to get rid of the corner discoloration. Ive donr that before on other 900NF monitors.

Thanks for the info! Just ordered 2 for a total of $672.36. I guess I saved $100-$80 on this deal. I was planning on ordering this monitor anyway.

I own the Sony GDM-F400, Samsung 900NF, and (2x) Samsung 700NF. All of these monitors have excellent image quality.

The 900NF is very comparable to the Sony GDM-F400. I splurged on the Sony in 98' but after buying the 900NF I will never pay high prices for a monitor again.

By the way, I joined this forum before the Hitachi 751 scandal(mentioned again in Maximum PC's latest issue) which I was apart of too.

I do not know why but I like to buy a monitor even when I do not need one.

I use mine with the Matrox G450 cards.

I think the 751 scandal spawned some kind of monitor deal search fetish. I have to say this one fed the fetish quite nicely.

<< is NEC the same company as Mistubishi? >>

yes, they had a merger.

And for those asking if there is a difference between Mitsubishi Diamondscan, and Sony Trinitron....
The Mitsu supposedly uses one gun for all 3 colors (RGB). Sony uses three seperate guns, one for each color.

Damn I paid $440 10 months ago for this thing. It's an amazing monitor. Dell order tracking sux balls. It says "in transit to local carrier" forever. The only way to get a tracking number is to call and go through their automated process.

I don't think this is the wrong forum for this comment. Any comments about the quality of the product that people are buying should be welcome IMHO. Many people buy sight unseen and just on the recommendations of others in this forum, comments good or bad should be here to help people make an informed decision.

The samsung 900NF uses a Sony Trinitron tube right?

I also saw this quote from a review on the 900NF from www.iamnotageek.com

The only reason I am mentioning it is because I find the solution amusing. It is possible that thin vertical black lines may appear. This effect is caused by grille element overlap which can occur in shipping. Here is the solution quoted from the manual "We suggest slapping the cabinet sides with an open palm and after the monitor is warm". If only more problems could be solved like that.
